At the young age of 16, Aya Khalifa from Syria was diagnosed with life-threatening health issues, although the condition was congenital. What started as a gradual yellowish tint to her skin and eyes would eventually be diagnosed as severe hyperbilirubinemia due to acute liver failure. This led to general weakness, unstable conditions, excessive scratching, nausea, and poor appetite, which made it impossible for her to carry out any of her normal daily activities.
First, Aya was thought to be suffering from temporary jaundice; however, her body developed more severe symptoms over time. Ayah's condition progressed with severe constipation, fatigue, and jaundice, which was confirmed to be from hyperbilirubinemia caused by severe liver dysfunction after visiting several times to hospitals in Syria. The doctors determined that she needed a liver transplant because her bilirubin levels were so high that they posed a danger to both her and her family.
Aya's family was devastated by the diagnosis, as well as the fact that a liver transplant was the only solution for her at such a young age. Both Aya and her family's awareness of the extreme urgency of her condition was evident, so they immediately went in search of a more advanced treatment abroad due to the limited options available for treatment within Syria. They first contacted MediGence on 5th August 2025. They ultimately decided to go to India after finding MediGence, and through it, her case manager, Usama.
On September 4, 2025, Aya arrived in India with her family. From the moment she arrived at the airport to her admission to the hospital, all arrangements had been made for her convenience, safety, and peace of mind. There she met Dr. Giriraj Bora at Artemis Hospital. Aya was scheduled to undergo multiple medical evaluations, which included the following:
Aya's liver transplant was determined by the transplant team to be necessary to save her life. The transplant team placed her in the highest priority for surgery because she was very young and eligible for the procedure. Aya and her family received detailed explanations of the entire surgical process and were provided information about how liver transplants have performed very well among individuals her age.
When an individual requires a liver transplant, it is because of extensive damage to their existing liver and the individual cannot recover or heal with medication only. A liver transplant is performed as follows:
Following the completion of donor matching and the extensive planning of the surgical procedure, Aya was scheduled to receive her transplant surgery at Artemis Hospital.
Aya underwent multiple hours of surgical intervention from a highly qualified and experienced transplant team that represents various disciplines. However, Aya's bile duct was narrow and could not be connected in the same procedure; she was advised to undergo another surgery to connect the bile duct with stents after 2 to 3 months. Following completion of surgery, Aya was transferred to the critical care unit for continued monitoring and observation.
The first few days post-transplant were critical to her recovery. During this time, Aya was monitored continuously, with the following systems being observed and monitored:
Aya achieved the following milestones on her road to recovery:
Aya can now walk, eat much more like her normal self, and enjoy time with her family again. After so long, Aya is beginning to feel like a normal young adult again. Aya stayed in the hospital for 20 days and was closely monitored as an outpatient after that. She stayed in India for a total of 50 days.
At just sixteen years of age, Aya Khalifa was faced with a medical dilemma that no teenager is ever prepared for. But with the courage of her family's support and the world-class medical benefits she received at Artemis Hospital, Aya came through as a stronger individual.
The experience of receiving a successful liver transplant not only saved a life but also opened a door for future opportunities. Today, Aya is excited about going back to school, looking forward to continuing the pursuit of her dreams, and living life to its fullest with renewed energy.
Aya's story shows that no matter how severe the medical condition is, with timely intervention, proper care and unwavering determination, such serious life-threatening conditions can be overcome once you have access to a great medical team and facilities, thus restoring health, happiness and the ability to live a full life again with successful functional liver transplantation.
