Case Study: Martina Fitzsimons - When Medicine Becomes a Journey of Faith

Patient Name: Martina Fitzsimons
Gender: Female
Age: 53
Country: Austria

A Diagnosis Too Rare for Answers

Martina Fitzsimons was diagnosed with a rare connective tissue disorder marked by severe symptoms, including chronic pain, progressive stiffness, muscle spasticity, and declining mobility. Her case was published in Austrian media as a rare diagnosis for which no established treatment was available in the country.

Both Martina and her husband are doctors. Their deep understanding of medicine made the reality even more difficult to accept, that despite modern advancements, there was no clear path forward.

Searching Across Borders

Martina explored consultations across Europe, but every response echoed the same limitation: symptoms could be managed, but the root cause could not be treated. Refusing to give up, she connected with MediGence.

MediGence coordinated expert medical opinions from more than six countries, assembling a global perspective on her condition. After careful evaluation, Martina made the courageous decision to travel to India for treatment.

Chennai: The First Long Battle

Martina travelled to Global Hospital, Chennai, where she stayed for nearly three months. Due to her medical condition, she could not travel with a personal attendant. MediGence appointed a full-time medical specialist to act as her dedicated attendant throughout her stay.

During this period, she underwent multiple procedures, including breast surgery. Despite extensive medical efforts, her symptoms persisted. She returned to Austria, but her fight was not over.

Returning for a Second Fight

Determined to continue her journey, Martina travelled again to India, this time to Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi. She made two separate visits and underwent an intensive treatment plan.

Her treatment included alternate-day plasmapheresis, continuous rehabilitation therapy to improve mobility and reduce muscle spasticity, breast surgery follow-up, removal of a cyst from her spine, and surgical interventions for hernia and GERD.

Beyond Medicine: Advocacy and Compassion

One of the most challenging moments came when Martina required an opioid-based injection prescribed in Austria to manage her severe pain. The medication was not legally permitted under Indian narcotics regulations.

MediGence worked closely with the Department of Narcotics and Drugs and customs authorities to obtain special approvals, ensuring her medication could be administered legally and without complications. This effort went beyond coordination; it represented advocacy and commitment.

The Road Ahead: Stem Cell Hope

After extensive evaluation and procedures, stem cell therapy emerged as the most promising path forward to improve Martina's quality of life. Based on research, the therapy may need to be repeated every five years.

Martina has now returned to Austria. Her journey continues, and MediGence looks forward to welcoming her again for her stem cell therapy.

A Story Close to the Heart

Martina's journey is not just a medical case. It is a story of resilience, persistence, and the refusal to accept limitations. Some stories go beyond treatment; they become personal. Her courage remains an inspiration to everyone involved in her care.
