Mamadu, a 39-year-old Sierra Leonean male, has lived with a leg deformity for many years. Initially, a small alignment issue, the deformity has developed into significant leg bowing and has affected both his appearance and his confidence and comfort in day-to-day activities. As time has passed, the uneven shape of his knees has caused changes in his posture and how he walks. He has found that standing for long periods or walking long distances has become uncomfortable, and he is now seeking a permanent fix for his problem.
Mamadu decided to research online to explore the options available to correct his issue. He discovered advanced orthopedic surgical procedures in India that would correct bow leg deformity, and he began to explore the options available to him. During the research process, Mamadu found MediGence and, through it, Arhama, who was instrumental in helping him understand the available treatment options and how to pursue treatment abroad.
Arhama, his case manager, worked with him to ensure that Mamadu had a clear understanding of all procedures and available support before he decided to go abroad for his specialised orthopaedic surgery.
Mamadu arrived in India for surgery on January 19, 2026. He was determined and hopeful that he could regain his ability to move freely and comfortably. When he landed in India, Mamadu found that his airport transfer and accommodations had already been arranged, and someone was assisting him with the transition from the airport. The seamless transition from the airport to his accommodations helped him feel at ease and focus on his continuing treatment. Mamadu was assigned a dedicated care team leader (Aakash) who assisted him during the entire process, addressing any and all concerns he had along the way.
A consultation with Dr. Ashish Chaudhary (Orthopedic Surgeon) determined the severity of Mamadu's condition based on a comprehensive medical evaluation. Dr. Chaudhary recommended bilateral total knee replacement surgery as the most appropriate option for Mamadu's condition.
The primary reasons for performing both replacements are to correct the bow of Mamadu's legs, restore normal alignment, and improve Mamadu's overall posture. Mamadu was guided through the process of the procedure, including how long he would be expected to recover and how he would be cared for after surgery.
Mamadu successfully underwent bilateral total knee replacement. The purpose of this surgery was to correct the structural alignment of his knees, both functionally and cosmetically, addressing their alignment and appearance, as he had been living with knee misalignment for many years. He was closely monitored and received the necessary post-operative support from the medical team to ensure a smooth recovery.
Within a few days after his operation, he started physiotherapy sessions, which have been very beneficial in helping him regain strength and mobility. Over the 30 days Mamadu was in India, he demonstrated considerable improvement and confidence in his ability to move around.
The most visibly noticeable improvement has been Mamadu's posture. His legs are now properly aligned; the shape of both his knees (which were previously disproportionate) has been corrected, and he can now stand and walk with much greater ease than before. The procedure has had an enormous effect on his confidence and his quality of life, not just physically, but mentally as well. Activities that were previously painful to perform have become much easier, and overall, he is starting to experience a sense of freedom he has never felt before.
Mamadu's experience was much more than just receiving medical care, as he benefited from travel & accommodation, and support before, during, and after his medical treatment. This coordination among all members of his care team ensured Mamadu had the support he needed throughout his journey (from the first consultation to after discharge). Mr. Mamadu is now back at home, able to walk better, with corrected posture, and more confident in his ability to live independently.
