The disruption to the normal flow of everyday life, to the movement of simple things becomes a long process for someone who had once been able to do so freely. Imagine you have the same issue. For Abeba, a 63-year-old Eritrean woman, this was a long path from pain and not knowing what was going on until she received treatment for her mobility and overall well-being.
At first, Abeba did not think much about the lack of mobility that affected her daily activities. She always lived on her own and valued her independence. But with each passing week, she felt increasing pain in her leg, reducing her ability to move. Walking was bumpy and painful; standing for long periods was tiring; and several breaks were required throughout the day.
In addition, her leg was beginning to hurt, and she began experiencing palpitations, hypertension and anxiety. After receiving an evaluation, Abeba learned she had a blood condition called thrombosis. Abeba exhibited immobility and cardiac distress, making her realise that she needed immediate, specialised treatment. But locally, she faced obstacles to receiving adequate cardiovascular treatment.
A former patient who had been successfully treated abroad encouraged Abeba to seek treatment from an external resource, which became the catalyst for Abeba to pursue alternative care through the international healthcare network MediGence. After being referred to Dr. Vishwas Kaushik through here, he guided Abeba in his review of her medical records and her overall assessment to determine the most appropriate form of treatment for her current medical condition.
Abeba's treatment for her medical condition was determined to take place in Turkey at Medicana Hospital, given the facility's excellent reputation for managing complex cases, particularly those involving cardiovascular surgery.
Professor Dr. Gokce Sirin, MD, a highly qualified and experienced cardiovascular surgeon well known for his attention to detail, patient-centred care, and quality of clinical outcomes, was going to treat her. From the outset, the focus was on ensuring her safety and providing full transparency throughout the process, including the development of a personalised treatment plan to ensure her needs were met.
Abeba arrived at Medicana Hospital on October 25, 2025, to allow sufficient time for all pre-treatment activities to be completed before her scheduled surgery.
Upon arrival at Medicana Hospital, comprehensive evaluations were carried out to determine the size/extent of the blood clot(s) and how the clots affected the blood flow to and from Abebaâs heart. Professor Dr. Sirin met with Abeba to discuss all evaluative findings, formulate an individualized treatment plan to remove the blood clot(s), and answer all questions or concerns she had regarding both her evaluation and treatment plan.
After thorough research and consideration, Abeba's treatment was scheduled at Medicana Hospital in Turkey. The main focus of treatment for Abeba was establishing a safe environment for her care through complete transparency and by providing a treatment plan individualised to meet her specific healthcare needs.
Although Abeba arrived in Turkey to begin her pre-operative evaluation and to have her pre-operative consultation on 25 October 2022, there were enough days until completing her scheduled procedure for the doctors to complete all of the necessary pre-operative evaluations, as well as determine how the blood clots and their size impact both the circulation of blood throughout her body and the function of her heart.
During Abeba's preoperative evaluations and consultation with Professor Gokce Sirin, he was thorough and exhaustive in explaining the test results and the proposed treatment plan, and in answering all of Abeba's questions to her satisfaction. Through an open style of communication throughout her entire process, Abeba was able to alleviate her concerns and enhance her confidence in entrusting the doctors and staff with her immediate and long-term healthcare needs.
On 10 November, Abeba underwent surgery for her cardiovascular system to remove her clots and restore healthy blood flow. This surgery was completed with the utmost care with the use of advanced surgical techniques that complied with international standards.
The surgical staff monitored Abeba's vitals and comfort through the entire procedure, ensuring that she remained stable through all phases of surgery and post-operative care. Abeba spent 11 days in Turkey. During those 11 days, she received 8 days of focused post-operative care and monitoring, both of which are crucial to assess her response to treatment and to ensure that she doesn't have post-surgical complications.
Gentle physiotherapy and graded mobility exercises were gradually incorporated into Abeba's rehabilitation plan to help restore her mobility. Daily, she began to meet goals, such as standing, walking and moving without experiencing the same pain that she had previously. As each day passed, the hospital staff supported Abeba's rehabilitation, providing her with a safe, encouraging, and progressive environment.
Reflecting on her difficult journey, Abeba is deeply grateful to the many people who supported her at every stage. She has the greatest appreciation for the guidance she received from Medigence and Dr. Kaushik, whose encouragement and support were so important to her as she began her healing process.
Abeba will always remember the day she realised how much easier it had become for her to walk again, without the intense soreness that had previously limited her mobility. Her immobility has drastically improved, and Abeba no longer needs to worry about experiencing the cardiac issues that presented themselves prior to going into surgery.
Abeba has reached a physical state in which she leads a full, healthy, active, and completely pain-free lifestyle. She has been freed from prior constraints and can now participate in life with renewed enthusiasm and energy. She feels confident moving around daily; she feels that she has an active role in life through her routines; and, for the first time in a very long time, she is once again connected to everything and everyone in her life.
From her experiences, she has learned how much the availability of timely medical intervention and the selection of appropriate specialists depend on. Her experience has transformed what she once thought would be a terrible, challenging medical ordeal into a transpiring story of resilience, reparation and hope.
