The Success Rate of Stroke Treatment and Rehabilitation
A stroke is a medical emergency that needs immediate attention. In this, the blood supply to your brain is suddenly cut off. The brain cells will begin to die within minutes if prompt treatment is not given. Thankfully,  today there are many treatments for stroke and these effective treatments can protect the person from disabilities as a result of a stroke. In addition to these, rehabilitation after stroke has also emerged as a promising approach to help the patient overcome the effects of stroke. Both treatment and rehabilitation have been successful in combating stroke. Studies have reported that after receiving timely treatment for stroke, around 66% of the patients were able to survive for more than 3 years.
However, this survival rate can also be influenced by factors such as the severity of your stroke, your overall health, and age. The type of stroke can also influence the success rate of stroke treatment and recovery. For instance, hemorrhagic stroke usually has a lower rate of survival as opposed to ischemic stroke. At about 5 years after the stroke, the average survival rate was recorded at 48%.  This was calculated after taking into consideration the survival rate of all the different types of stroke.
In countries like India, the success rate of surgery for an ischemic stroke is about  65%. Rehabilitation has been successful in helping patients regain their strength and independence after a stroke. The National Stroke Association estimates that 10% of stroke victims recover almost entirely and 25% recover with only slight limitations after rehabilitation.  Around 40% more people have moderate to severe disabilities that call for specialized treatment. As a result, you may have a disability that interferes with your ability to carry out daily tasks, whether at work or in your personal life. Furthermore, 10% of stroke survivors need long-term care in a nursing home or other facility. In a set of studies, the impact of rehabilitation was analyzed on around 51 patients who were unable to walk for around 3 months after having a stroke. In this group, rehabilitation for two years could successfully help 74% of stroke survivors in being able to walk again without the need for any assistance.
