Kayan, a bubbly four-year-old girl from Oman, whose parents sought medical care when she experienced mild swelling that ultimately became a health concern. The familyâs experience was marked by fear, hope, good medical care, and ultimately, healing.
Kayan's parents first noticed the swelling around Kayan's eyes, particularly in the mornings. Although it initially appeared minor and was easily dismissed as due to fatigue or allergies, Kayan's swelling had continued to progress and was now affecting her ankles, feet, legs, and abdomen. The clothing Kayan wore was now tighter; her face was puffier than usual, and she seemed to be having difficulty getting comfortable.
As the days went on, the swelling became persistent rather than temporary, which was very concerning for young Kayan and her family. Her parents were very concerned that Kayan was sick and therefore sought medical attention immediately.
Kayan's medical diagnosis was that of nephrotic syndrome. While it is treatable with medical intervention, accurate diagnosis is essential, and ongoing monitoring and medical management will be required. If not properly managed, nephrotic syndrome can affect your child's growth, immunity and overall health, and that's why Kayan's parents were committed to obtaining the finest care for Kayan as well as the most appropriate time to commence that care.
Kayan's parents sought a comprehensive pediatric nephrology evaluation and treatment plan tailored to a small child, following consultations with their physician and nephrologist. Kayan's parents were connected with Usama through Medigence, who successfully guided them through the available treatment options and locations.
After Usama's review of Kayan's medical records and the range of pediatric renal services in India, Kayan's parents considered India the ideal destination for her care, as it has many hospitals that provide high-quality care with skilled doctors who specialise in treating children with kidney diseases.
On August 24, 2025, Kayan and her family arrived in India to begin their medical treatment. Visa assistance and airport transfer were arranged by MediGence. Cloudnine Hospital was chosen as the most appropriate place for Kayan's treatment. Cloudnine is a prominent healthcare organisation primarily focused on supporting mothers and children.
Kayan's care was assigned to Dr. Sidharth Kumar Sethi, an experienced physician who has developed significant knowledge in assessing and treating nephrotic syndrome in children. From the outset, understanding Kayan's condition and ensuring that Kayan felt safe and comfortable were the top priorities.
After arriving at Cloudnine Hospital, Kayan went through a detailed evaluation process that included laboratory testing, physical examination, and close monitoring of Kayan's symptoms. Throughout Kayan's evaluation, Dr Sethi took the time to explain the significance of Kayan's nephrotic syndrome diagnosis to her parents, including how it would be treated and her expected outcomes from treatment.
Kayan had a treatment plan that included both medical management and counselling, instead of doing any type of invasive procedure. Medications were prescribed very carefully by adjusting dosages as well as watching for side effects of the medications and support for how to manage her medication and diet at home, and what signs and symptoms to report back to the hospital.
Kayan had a five-day stay in the country (her treatment was done as a day procedure), and during this time, her response to medications was closely monitored. Daily assessments were individually completed and documented to provide feedback on the reduction in swelling, the effects on Kayan's urine output, and her overall well-being. The parents were particularly impressed by the professionalism of the medical team, which provided Kayan with reassurance throughout her treatment.
Before the first couple of days of treatment had begun, Kayan had already seen improvement in how much swelling she had in her eyes and legs, as well as in her tummy. She had more energy and became more able to enjoy playing; this was a small but strong indicator that she had responded to treatment.
Dr. Seth and his support staff provided adequate training to Kayan's parents to ensure that they felt very comfortable with having Kayan return home, and taught them about taking medications properly, making necessary lifestyle changes, healthy nutrition practices, and having consistent follow-up with their physician to decrease the likelihood of their child having a future complication related to nephrotic syndrome.
When Kayan was finished with her assessment and treatment stabilisation, she was discharged with a good prognosis. Kayan's parents were given reassurance that their daughter would continue to have a normal, active lifestyle with her continued treatment and doctor monitoring.
No significant issues requiring surgical repair or lasting effects occurred; most importantly, when Kayan left the hospital, she did so with a smile and enthusiasm to resume all activities, including playing, learning, and growing.
Kayan is thriving and has successfully resolved any problems her family had with swelling. She can now participate in the same daily activities as other children her age, and she experiences minimal discomfort or restrictions on her activities. Her parents describe this as a major change in the level of fear they had before and a newfound confidence in the face of an uncertain future.
Kayan's experience, from being visibly swollen and afraid to recovery and living a normal childhood, demonstrates the impact that receiving appropriate care at the right time can have on the outcome. Through a comprehensive evaluation process on her medical condition, careful treatment management, and ongoing support from her parents, Kayan was provided with the best possible opportunity for a long-term recovery.
Today, Kayan's world once again focuses on play, laughter, and endless possibilities. It is a strong reminder that even the smallest patients can overcome any obstacle with appropriate healthcare.
