Stem Cell Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a brain and spinal cord condition that can be devastating (central nervous system). The protective sheath (myelin) that surrounds nerve fibres is attacked by the immune system in MS, causing communication issues between the brain and the rest of the body. The condition might eventually cause permanent nerve injury or degeneration. Some MS facts:

  • MS is associated to increased depression and anxiety in patients, as well as a lower quality of life.
  • It can result in a reduction in work capacity as well as a decreased ability to participate in society.
  • According to the most comprehensive global survey to date, 2.8 million people worldwide have multiple sclerosis (MS). That implies someone with MS is diagnosed every 5 minutes somewhere on the planet.
  • In the United States, about a million of them live.
  • Body fat may play a role in MS in women. According to a study, women carry more fat on their bodies than males, putting them at a higher risk of MS.
  • The majority of people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50 years, but it can occur at any age.
  • MS is more common in northern European and American areas, but it can appear in any geographic location, according to the Atlas of MS

The amount of nerve damage and which nerves are damaged determine the signs and symptoms of MS. Some persons with severe MS lose their ability to walk independently or at all, while others go into remission for long periods of time without experiencing any new symptoms. Since then, multiple sclerosis has remained incurable. Stem cell therapy, on the other hand, can assist in speedy recovery from attacks, change the course of the disease, and manage symptoms without causing any further complications. Stem cell has emerged as a new breakthrough for Multiple sclerosis in 2022. Patients with Multiple Sclerosis may benefit from stem cell therapy. Mesenchymal stem cells can lower inflammation and modify the immune system, which could be tremendously advantageous for MS sufferers. • Fatigue- According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, about 80% of patients with MS experience fatigue (NMSS). MS-related fatigue might make it difficult to carry out day-to-day activities.
  • Walking difficulty- With MS, you may have difficulties walking, as well as numbness in your legs or feet, difficulty balance, muscular weakness, muscle stiffness, and vision problems.
  • Vision Problems- Many persons with MS experience vision issues as one of their early symptoms. One or both eyes may be affected by vision difficulties. These problems may appear and disappear, or they may worsen over time. They can also be completely resolved. Optic neuritis, which causes pain or hazy vision in one eye, diplopia, or double vision, and nystagmus, or involuntary eye movement, are all typical vision disorders linked with MS.
  • Lhermitte’s sign- A person may experience a sensation like an electric shock when they move their neck, known as Lhermitte’s sign.
  • Speaking difficulties- MS develops brain lesions that might impair speech. Dysarthria is a term for a variety of speech problems that can range from mild to severe. Slurred speech, "scanning" speech (where there are extended pauses between words or syllables), and fluctuations in voice volume are all symptoms of dysarthria.
  • Other symptoms- Acute or chronic pain, tremors, cognitive challenges such as attention, memory, and word identification, trouble eating and swallowing, sleeping problems, and bladder control problems are all common MS symptoms.

Causes

  • Multiple sclerosis has no recognised origin. It's classified as an autoimmune disease because the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. This immune system dysfunction in MS causes the fatty substance that coats and protects nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord to be destroyed (myelin).
  • Myelin is similar to the insulation that protects electrical cables. The messages that go along that nerve fibre may be slowed or inhibited if the protecting myelin is broken and the nerve fibre is exposed.
  • It's unclear why some people develop MS and others do not. It appears that a combination of hereditary and environmental variables is to be responsible.

Types of Multiple Sclerosis Stages Treated by Stem Cell Therapy

Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)-  A pre-MS disease characterised by a single bout of symptoms lasting at least 24 hours is known as CIS. Demyelination of the CNS is the cause of these symptoms. Although this experience is typical of MS, it isn't enough to diagnose the disease. You're more likely to be diagnosed with RRMS if you have more than one lesion or a positive oligoclonal band (OCB) in your spinal fluid during a spinal tap. You're less likely to be diagnosed with MS if these lesions aren't present or if your spinal fluid doesn't reveal OCBs. Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS)- Clear relapses of disease activity are followed by remissions in relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Symptoms are minor or nonexistent during remission periods, and disease progression is modest to moderate. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, RRMS is the most frequent form of MS at the time of start, accounting for around 85 %. Primary-progressive MS (PPMS)- If you have primary progressive MS (PPMS), your neurological function will deteriorate over time as your symptoms worsen. Short periods of stability can, however, occur. When there are new or enhancing brain lesions, the terms "active" and "not active" are occasionally employed to indicate disease activity. PPMS affects about 15% of patients with MS. Secondary-progressive MS (SPMS)- Secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) is a form of multiple sclerosis. After relapsing-remitting MS, it's considered the following stage (RRMS). There are no longer any evidence of remission in SPMS. This indicates that despite treatment, the illness is deteriorating.

The importance of Stem Cell Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis is a silent & chronic disease, which affects younger adults, often women. MS can be difficult to diagnose and its symptoms could vary person to person. Issues with the traditional treatment methods- Unfortunately, a cure doesn’t exist yet for multiple sclerosis (MS). Current MS treatment procedures try to relieve symptoms but do not address the underlying problems. Worse, many of the medications used to treat MS symptoms have negative side effects and are unable to prevent disease progression in many patients. Finally, the costs of these treatments often put a strain on the patient's finances. For example, an annual regimen of Ocrevus (ocrelizumab), a newer medicine, can cost upwards of $65,000 USD. Stem cell treatment for MS- A person with MS has a variety of treatment choices, including stem cell therapy. Stem cells are cells that have the ability to convert into different cell types. They can also renew, producing an endless supply of new cells. This makes them beneficial in the treatment of MS. The healing and repair-promoting characteristics of stem cell therapy for MS have been proven. The use of umbilical cord cells produced from enlarged cord tissue has the potential to improve MS treatment. MSCs (mesenchymal stem cells) can help the body fight inflammation. Stem cells will help to regulate the immune system and prevent future myelin breakdown once they have been delivered. This makes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) a promising treatment option for MS and other diseases marked by inflammation and/or tissue damage.

Eligibility of Stem Cell Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

While there is no cure for MS, stem cell therapy can reduce patients' symptoms and decrease the disease's development. As a result, there are no eligibility requirements unless the patient has Multiple Sclerosis (any of the conditions). Other factors on the basis of Multiple sclerosis condition are evaluated-

  • Age (between 20-50 years)
  • Presence of other illness
  • Undergone any treatment or surgery earlier or not
  • Lifestyle habits and many more

Stem Cell Treatment Protocol used for COPD by GAIA (in association with CEMAB) Although there is no cure for MS, there are treatments that help delay the disease's course, lessen the number and severity of relapses, and alleviate symptoms. Scientists and doctors are increasingly looking into using stem cell treatment to regenerate various bodily cells and restore function to patients who have lost it due to medical reasons. CEMAB (in partnership with GAIA) has developed treatment protocols for every condition that can be treated with stem cell therapy. The MS protocol tries to lower the body's overall levels of chronic low-grade inflammation. The consequences are expected to linger for a long period. Treatment Protocol-

  • Two-day protocol centers on the intrathecal transplant of stem cells
  • A minimum of 120 million cord tissue-derived MSCs (Mesenchymal Stem Cells) are injected directly into the spinal canal
  • The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes, is minimally invasive, and has very little downtime
  • Patients normally travel home two days following their scheduled appointment.

Researchers hope that one day, stem cell therapy techniques may be able to reverse the damage done by MS and restore functionality in the nervous system.

Advantages of Stem Cell Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological and autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system turns against itself. Stem cell therapy, specifically utilising mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), has shown considerable promise in the treatment of the disease. Since stem cell therapy can be both immunomodulatory (meaning it can control the immune system) and regenerative, it's a promising treatment option for MS and other diseases marked by inflammation and tissue degeneration. Transplantation with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has also been demonstrated to reduce the course of MS in patients. MS Patients may be able to expect an increase in energy, flexibility, strength, mobility, and control of basic function. MS-specific advantages you can avail with stem cell therapy are-

  • Promote cell regeneration
  • Replaces damaged & diseased tissues
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved energy
  • Modulate immune system
  • Improved symptom management

For Multiple Sclerosis, stem cell therapy, specifically the infusion of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), has shown considerable promise in terms of improving symptoms and stabilising disease progression. MSCs have been shown in many models to have immunomodulatory (ability to modulate the immune system), tissue-protective, and repair-promoting capabilities, making them an appealing therapy for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other disorders defined by inflammation and/or tissue injury. The only question is how long it can last, as there is no proof of that. However, 5 years following treatment, it was discovered that 69% of those who had stem cell therapy did not experience a relapse in MS symptoms or new brain lesions produced by MS.
