Normal delivery is also commonly known as vaginal delivery. It is a natural process in which childbirth occurs through the vaginal opening. During childbirth, the uterus contracts and the cervix opens up to push the baby out of the womb through the vaginal opening (also known as the birth canal). Sometimes a normal delivery can be induced labor (drugs or other methods are used to induce the contractions) or assisted delivery (forceps, a vacuum device, etc. might be used).
The recovery period after a vaginal delivery varies and is generally quicker compared to a C-section. Numerous factors can impact the healing process. One such factor is whether there's a tear in the vaginal area and the extent of the tear. If a vaginal tear occurs, soreness could persist for a few weeks. Activities like using the restroom, sitting, standing, and doing daily tasks might cause discomfort and extend the recovery time. Swelling and itchiness around the tear are normal. Regardless of vaginal tearing, many individuals may experience swelling, bruising, and general soreness around the vaginal region for about one to two weeks. Applying cold compresses or using cooling sanitary pads on the vaginal area can offer relief.
