Patient from Zambia Underwent ACL and PCL Reconstruction Surgery in India

Pre-Treatment

Zambian football player from the team Kabwe Warriors, Alfred Chirwa, 19, suffered a huge blow on his football career after encountering a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament more than a year ago.

The injury rendered him unfit to play the sport and therefore, his career was at risk. His team physiotherapist Mr. Gibson Chaloba assisted him with exercises and physical rehabilitation but when he realized that his knee pain and inflammation is getting worse, he decided to take him for a scan wherein it was realized that he is suffering from complete tear of ACL.

Following the scans, Mr. Chaloba discussed the results with the local orthopedic specialist. Considering it to be a case of multiple sports injuries to the knee, the local orthopedic specialist decided to refer them abroad for the surgery to repair the ligaments.

It was then that Mr. Chaloba decided to look for options for surgery abroad. Since the physiotherapist had limited money in hand approved as a budget for the surgery, he has to select an affordable option to plan his treatment. This is when he contacted MediGence to get quotations and to know the best options available to them.

Even though their preference was South Africa due to the proximity, budget was a constraint. When the Patient Advisory representative called him, Mr. Chaloba discussed the condition of the boy and also shared his preferences. Upon request, the team prepared a complete end to end estimation of treatment and other miscellaneous expenses to Mr. Chaloba to get approval on the funds from the team’s Finance Manager. There were a few hiccups in getting the final approval on the surgery which actually delayed the timeline a bit but they were finally able to make it through the long journey and reach India for Alfred’s treatment.

Treatment

Alfred and Mr. Chaloba reached India on 23rd January, 2020. The first consultation was planned for January 24th and Alfred was directly admitted to the hospital. A fresh MRI conducted revealed that Alfred’s knee was badly damaged with ACL, PCL, and meniscus completely torn. He was posted for surgery on January 25th. The surgery was successfully performed as all of the damaged ligaments were repaired.

Post- Treatment

After the mandatory care and some rehabilitation, Alfred was discharged from the hospital on January 27th. Dr. Chaudhary advised him of the guidelines and precautionary measures to be followed for his swift, smooth and healthy recovery. Alfred has also been suggested a rehabilitation plan to follow for the next six months after which he can start playing again. His rehabilitation was carried out by Mr. Chaloba during his stay at the hotel.

Both Alfred and his physiotherapist Gibson were extremely satisfied with their overall experience.
