Patient from Nigeria Underwent Leg Ulcer Treatment in Dubai

Mr. Bawa met with an accident in the year 2005 and sustained massive injuries on his legs and hands. Due to these injuries, he experienced shrilling pain and started taking painkiller injections on his own. Slowly, he started getting addicted to the injections and it was difficult for him to live without it every day. In the absence of painkillers, he would feel restless and painful. This resulted in chronic ulcers on the site where the painkillers were constantly injected. Over a period of time, the ulcers became infected and there was pus accumulation.

The skin started to decay as the infection spread around the site of ulcers on the legs and hands. For aesthetic improvements, he underwent skin grafting about 3 years ago but it failed to limit the infection from spreading further. Due to the inadequate healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria, Mr. Bawa and his wife were keen to travel out of the country for treatment. Dr. Hadiza Abubakar Bawa, the wife of Mr. Bawa, got in touch with MediGence over email regarding her husband's illness. She was very worried about her husband's condition as he was addicted to painkiller injections for the last 15 years.

Pre-treatment

Mrs. and Mr. Bawa arrived in Dubai on 8th August 2019. They were received and safely accommodated to their hotel by the hospital team, in close coordination with the Patient Care team at MediGence. The initial investigations and tests as done by Dr. Faisal Ameer. The tests revealed that the Hb levels were extremely low (6.0). Following this, Dr. Ameer advised Mr. Bawa for blood transfusion to prepare him for the skin grafting procedure.

However, Mr. Bawa has apprehensions about getting a transfusion. So Dr. Ameer decided to give him supplements to improve Hb levels and decided to go ahead with the procedure. Based on Dr. Ameer's recommendation, the surgery was delayed until the wound was healed and ready for skin grafting procedure. He was given medications to control the infection and the dressings were routinely changed to facilitate healing.

This led to a swift improvement s in the wound. Subsequently, after the wound has got better, skin grafting procedure was conducted over a course of multiple sittings and the first sitting was done on 6th September 2019. Skin Grafting is a surgical procedure that involves removing the skin from one area of the body and transplanting it on to a different area of the body. Itâ€™s usually performed in case of loss of the protective covering of the skin caused due to injury, infection or burn.

During the Procedure

Mr. Bawaâ€™s skin grafting for the affected areas in the legs and hands were successfully done over a course of multiple sittings on the scheduled dates, the final sitting for which took place on 10th September 2019. Mr. Bawa and his wife were very happy with the treatment outcome, hospital services, and the nursing staff.

Post-treatment

The skin grafting procedure of the affected areas in legs and hands was conducted smoothly and the infection came under control.
