This is the inspirational tale of 2-year-old Elisabeth Evita Elonga of Equatorial Guinea, whose early life was impacted by sickle cell illness. Elisabeth had to get blood transfusions every two months. She also frequently experienced weakness and recurrent fevers, which put a physical and psychological burden on her and her family.
As her condition continued to demand constant medical attention, her parents began looking for a long-term, curative solution, one that could give Elisabeth the chance to grow up free from pain and repeated hospital visits.
Elisabeth's family reached out to MediGence for advanced treatment abroad on July 22, 2025. The patient's advisor, Ms Vanshika, provided timely and compassionate assistance in securing an expert opinion and a pathway for care outside of their home country; she understood the high degree of urgency related to the treatment of sickle cell diseases in children.
A detailed consultation with the treating doctor was arranged before travel, helping the family clearly understand the treatment process, risks, and expectations. Based on medical suitability and expertise in paediatric bone marrow transplantation, India was recommended as the treatment destination.
MediGence coordinated Elisabeth's care at Fortis Memorial Research Institute Hospital, Gurgaon, India, where she was treated by Dr Vikas Dua, a renowned specialist in paediatric haematology and bone marrow transplantation.
After comprehensive evaluations and HLA typing tests, it was confirmed that Elisabeth's mother was a half-matched (haplo-identical) donor, opening the door to a potentially curative treatment. The medical team confirmed the diagnosis of sickle cell disease and designed a carefully structured treatment plan.
On October 13, 2025, Elisabeth left for India, where she spent about ninety days. Despite the rigorous nature of the treatment, it was managed without a lengthy hospital stay, allowing for close observation while preserving comfort.
Her treatment included:
This extraordinary combination of medical expertise and a mother's remarkable contribution marked a turning point in Elisabeth's journey.
The transplant went well. Elisabeth is no longer in need of frequent blood transfusions and is leading a pain-free, healthy life now. Her strength has returned, her fevers have decreased, and she can now enjoy childhood without constantly worrying about being ill.
The continuous support and cooperation that enabled this life-saving treatment were greatly appreciated by her family.
Elisabeth's story serves as a potent reminder that even the most difficult diseases can be resolved with the correct medical knowledge, swift action, and caring coordination. MediGence is proud to have provided her family with easy access to top-notch medical facilities, smooth medical travel, and ongoing support at every turn.
We hope Elisabeth Evita Elonga has a healthy, happy, and limitless future, a life revived and her childhood returned.
