Ibrahima Toure's Successful Living-Donor Kidney Transplant in Turkey

For Ibrahima Toure, a 65-year-old man from Guinea, living with end-stage kidney disease had made dialysis an unavoidable part of his daily life. Dependent on maintenance dialysis and facing the prospect of continuing treatment indefinitely, Ibrahima began looking for a definitive treatment option. Kidney transplantation offered him the possibility of moving beyond long-term dialysis and regaining greater freedom in his everyday life.

He wished to be treated in the UAE but could not due to the doctor's unavailability. His search for timely transplant care eventually took him from Guinea to Turkey, where he underwent a successful living-donor kidney transplant at VM Medical Park Bahcesehir under the care of Prof. Dr. Ayhan Dinckan as suggested by Vanshika (his case coordinator).

Diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) was made in Ibrahima, meaning that the kidneys can no longer work properly to do their particular jobs. Patients at this stage may need kidney replacement therapy to eliminate waste products accumulated in the body.

Maintenance dialysis became an important part of Ibrahima's medical care. While dialysis can prolong the lives of patients with kidney failure, continuous treatment may be very demanding in terms of time and lifestyle. On November 14, 2025, Ibrahima reached out to MediGence through its website. His medical records later revealed that he was afflicted with renal failure, thus requiring dialysis treatment.

Ibrahima, along with his brother, underwent the necessary compatibility tests, and their results showed that they have the same blood type, O-positive, thus forming an ideal basis for the donor-recipient matching. However, blood group compatibility is just one of the multiple factors in assessing compatibility for a kidney transplant.

The case was coordinated by Vanshika (his case coordinator), with VM Medical Park Bahcesehir in Turkey, where Ibrahima was evaluated by Prof. Ayhan Dinckan, a transplant surgeon.

Preparing for a Living-Donor Transplant

Before a kidney transplant can take place, both the recipient and potential donor must undergo extensive medical evaluation. Ibrahima and his sibling completed the required compatibility tests. Their results confirmed that both of them had O-positive blood, providing a strong initial basis for donor-recipient evaluation.

However, blood type compatibility alone is not sufficient to determine whether the transplant may proceed. The transplant team considered other compatibility factors as well, conducting an extensive battery of tests.

These included blood tests, tissue compatibility testing, imaging studies, and urine investigations, along with the other preoperative assessments required by the transplant team. For Ibrahima, this evaluation period was an important stage of the journey. It allowed the medical team to assess his suitability for transplantation while ensuring that his brother could safely proceed as a living donor.

His brother became the donor for the transplant after medical evaluations indicated that he was suitable for the donation. The operation was planned for 30 January 2026, and the total duration of medical procedures was around 30 days.

The Kidney Transplant Procedure

After completing the necessary evaluations and receiving clearance from the transplant team, Ibrahima underwent a living-donor kidney transplantation at VM Medical Park.

His brother served as the donor, and the transplant was successfully performed under the care of the specialist transplant team led by Prof. Ayhan Dinckan.

For Ibrahima, this was a major milestone after living with dialysis-dependent kidney failure. The successful transplantation meant that he had received a donor kidney and could begin the next phase of his treatment journey, recovery and ongoing management of his transplanted organ.

A Successful Outcome and the Importance of Post-Transplant Care

The reported outcome of Ibrahima's treatment was successful living-donor kidney transplantation. Once the transplant is done, the recipient has to go through constant check-ups throughout their lives to check kidney function, identify rejection or infections, and manage immunosuppressive medication.
