Brain Stroke Signs and Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Brain cells die from a lack of oxygen and nutrients when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted. We call this a stroke. It can lead to a variety of limitations, including mental, emotional, and physical limitations. Effective treatment and intervention are essential for decreasing the long-term effects of a stroke, promoting recovery, and improving the quality of life for stroke survivors.

Recognising Stroke

Knowing the various kinds of strokes that can occur is essential before starting treatments and interventions:

  • Ischaemic stroke: The most common type of stroke is caused by a blockage in a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain. It is responsible for about 87% of all strokes. Ischaemic strokes can be further divided into two groups:
    • A thrombotic stroke occurs when a blockage develops in one of the arteries supplying blood to the brain.
    • An embolic stroke occurs when a clot or other debris forms outside the brain, typically in the heart, and then enters the bloodstream and lodges in the brain's smaller arteries.
  • Haemorrhagic Stroke: Happens when a brain blood vessel ruptures or breaks. Damage to brain cells and blood leaking into the brain tissue are the outcomes. High blood pressure and brain aneurysms are the most frequent causes of hemorrhagic stroke. A weakness or thinness in the blood vessel wall is called an aneurysm. Another cause of hemorrhagic strokes is a brain tumour or cancer that begins in another area of the body and spreads to the brain.
  • Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA): Also known as a "mini-stroke," a TIA is caused by a momentary disruption in the blood flow to the brain. Even though the symptoms of a TIA are temporary and disappear quickly, they are a serious warning sign of potential future strokes.

Why do strokes occur?

Usually, an ischaemic stroke occurs when a blood clot obstructs a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain. The following conditions can result in these types of clots:

  • Blocked arteries, or atherosclerosis
  • Atrial fibrillation, particularly in cases of sleep apnoea
  • Disorders of coagulation
  • Heart defects, such as ventricular and atrial septal defects
  • Ischaemic microvascular disease

When a blood vessel in your brain bursts or ruptures, hemorrhagic strokes occur. Among the causes are:

  • Aneurysms in the brain
  • Tumours of the brain
  • High blood pressure (particularly if it has been high for a long time or is extremely high)
  • Any illness that weakens the blood vessels in your brain, including Moyamoya disease

Risk factors

Above stated are the variety of possible causes for each type of stroke. However, a person is generally more likely to have a stroke if they:

  • Are you obese or have excess weight
  • Possess a personal or family history of stroke and are at least 55 years old.
  • Shove elevated blood pressure
  • Have high cholesterol and diabetes
  • Have carotid artery disease, heart disease, or another vascular condition
  • Physically not active
  • Drink alcohol
  • Excessive use of illegal drugs
  • Smoking

Symptoms of Stroke

The following are the most typical signs of a stroke:

  • One side of the body is experiencing weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg
  • Dimness or loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Speech impairment, trouble speaking, or trouble understanding what other people are saying
  • Unknown cause of sudden, intense headache
  • Unstable walking or loss of balance
  • Complete or abrupt loss of all senses (hearing, taste, touch, smell, vision)
  • Vomiting and feeling nausea
  • Restlessness
  • Convulsions
  • Amnesia, or memory loss
  • Fainting

How to Respond to Stroke Symptoms?

To recognise the symptoms of a stroke and receive prompt assistance, become familiar with the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T.

  • B stands for balance; an abrupt loss of equilibrium
  • E stands for eyes; vision loss in one or both eyes is represented by the letter E.
  • F stands for a face that is weak or has an uneven smile.
  • A denotes a weakness in one arm.
  • S stands for speech; words have a slurred sound.
  • T stands for time; if you or someone else exhibits any of these symptoms, dial the ambulance immediately.

A stroke is a serious medical condition. Receiving treatment right away can improve your chances of making a full recovery or even save your life.
