Hip Dysplasia Treatment: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Hip dysplasia is a common condition that generally affects the hip joints of infants. With timely diagnosis and treatment before the age of 6 months, most babies experience no lasting complications. Although less common, hip dysplasia can also develop in older children and adults.

According to one study, one in a thousand children in the USA is born with hip Dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia is diagnosed in infants before the age of 6 months, often identified shortly after birth by doctors. Although babies may not exhibit noticeable symptoms at home, regular hip examinations are conducted during routine well-child visits. While less common, hip dysplasia can also develop in older children, adolescents, and adults.

Reason

Hip dysplasia occurs when the femur fails to properly fit into the socket within the pelvis. This condition may arise due to a shallow hip socket or an abnormal shape of the femur head. While most individuals with hip dysplasia are born with it, it can also develop during pregnancy if the fetus's position exerts pressure on the hips. Additionally, hip dysplasia can be hereditary, passed on from biological parents to their children.

The primary symptoms of hip dysplasia include:

  • Hip pain is felt in the front of the groin.
  • Sensation of hip instability or looseness.
  • Limping during walking or movement.
  • Discrepancy in leg lengths.

For infants not yet walking, hip dysplasia symptoms may manifest as:

  • One leg rotate outwards more than the other.
  • Reduced movement in one leg compared to the other.
  • Uneven or wrinkled skin around the thighs and buttocks.

The doctor might ask for some test reports before performing the Hip Dysplasia Treatment:

  • Ultrasound
  • Xray
  • CT scan

Recovery from hip dysplasia treatment depends on the type of method used. Babies wearing a brace usually recover well within a few months, with minimal additional care needed. Physical therapy involves consistent exercises to strengthen hip muscles, with gradual improvement over time. Surgical recovery varies: hip osteotomy takes several months with limited activity initially, while hip arthroscopy generally has a quicker recovery of a few weeks to a few months. Hip replacement recovery involves several weeks of physical therapy, with full recovery taking several months.
