Ear Surgery (Pinnaplasty): Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Ear surgery(pinnaplasty) is also called "Otoplasty" a cosmetic procedure that changes the shape and size or form of the ears, or pinning them back if they protrude.

It is generally safe, and most individuals are satisfied with the results. This procedure is suitable for individuals of any age once the ears have reached their full size, typically after the age of 5. For infants born with prominent ears or certain other ear shape anomalies, early intervention with splinting, initiated immediately after birth, can often correct these issues successfully.

Reasons for Considering Otoplasty

Individuals might consider otoplasty for several reasons, including:

  • Their ear or ears protrude out too far from the head.
  • Their ears are large in comparison to their head.
  • They are dissatisfied with the results of a previous ear surgery.

Otoplasty is generally performed on both ears to ensure optimal symmetry. It's important to note that otoplasty will not change the location of the ears or affect the ability to hear.

Following are the signs and symptoms

  • Asymmetrical Ears
  • Ear Deformities
  • Traumatic Ear Injuries
  • Psychological and Social Signs
  • Self-Consciousness

The following are the diagnoses and tests the doctor discussed before pinnoplasty:

  • The doctor will review the patient's Medical History to discuss current and past medical conditions, particularly any ear infections.
  • The doctor may also inquire about any medications you are currently taking or have taken recently, as well as any previous surgeries.
  • The doctor will evaluate the Physical Examination(ears to evaluate their placement, size, shape, and symmetry to determine suitable treatment options).
  • Blood Tests: It is used to check for any underlying conditions such as anemia, infections, or clotting disorders that could impact the surgery.
  • Imaging Studies: It is used to provide detailed anatomical information and aid in surgical planning.
  • Hearing Assessment: Hearing tests are done to evaluate the baseline hearing capacity, to be sure that surgery will not affect hearing

Post Pinnoplasty, the patient's ears will be covered in bandages for protection and support. It's common to experience some discomfort and itching post-surgery. If you notice that your discomfort worsens after taking pain medication, it's important to contact your doctor immediately.

To relieve pressure from the ears, the patient should avoid sleeping on the side that was operated on. Additionally, refrain from rubbing or applying excessive force to the incision sites. Consider wearing button-down shirts or loose-fitting collared shirts to prevent any accidental contact with the ears.

A few days following otoplasty, the doctor will remove the bandages. At this point, the ears may appear swollen and red. You may be advised to wear a loose headband that covers your ears at night for several weeks. This helps prevent unintentional pulling of the ears forward while rolling over in bed.

Discuss with your doctor the timeline for removing stitches, as some may dissolve on their own while others require removal in the doctor's office in the weeks following the procedure. Your doctor will also guide you on when it's safe to resume daily activities such as bathing and physical exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the alternatives to pinnaplasty?

A: It is possible to have ear moulds made, which can help gently reshape the ear. But it only works during the first few weeks of life as the cartilage of the ear is soft immediately after childbirth.

Q: What is the ear pinning surgery cost?

A: Cosmetic ear surgery cost depends on your choice of healthcare setting that you decide to approach the procedure and how far you are willing to travel to compensate with ear pinned back cost.

Q: Does ear pinning surgery cost the same around the world?

A: Cosmetic ear surgery cost is typically higher in developed countries such as the US and the UK. On the other hand, the procedure is relatively cheap in certain south-east Asian countries such as India and Thailand. The ear pinned back cost continues to remain less in these countries even when factors such as boarding, lodging, surgeon fee, hospital fee, and anaesthesia fee are taken into account.

Q: What precautions should I take after the ear plastic surgery?

A: Your doctor will prescribe a few painkillers and you should take these regularly for the first few days. You will have a dressing, usually, a tight bandage like a turban positioned around your head, covering your ears to protect the ears in the new position.

It is mandatory not to interfere with the dressing. In case of children, they often try to scratch their itchy ear under the dressing. This should be discouraged as this can lead to infection and poor healing of the ear plastic surgery scar.
