A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure whereby a healthy (working) kidney from a living or deceased donor is placed into a person who has renal failure, meaning that his or her kidneys no longer function properly to filter blood, remove waste from the body, and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance (such as sodium and potassium levels). The patient's diseased (i.e., non-working) kidneys will remain in the body unless they pose a health or safety risk; otherwise, they will be removed.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes several hours. After receiving a new kidney from an organ donor, patients must take lifelong immunosuppressants to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. In general, a successful kidney transplant will improve both a patient's quality of life and life expectancy compared to receiving long-term dialysis.
