A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure whereby a healthy (working) kidney from a living or deceased donor is placed into a person who has renal failure, meaning that his or her kidneys no longer function properly to filter blood, remove waste from the body, and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance (such as sodium and potassium levels). The patient's diseased (i.e., non-working) kidneys will remain in the body unless they pose a health or safety risk; otherwise, they will be removed.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes several hours. After receiving a new kidney from an organ donor, patients must take lifelong immunosuppressants to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. In general, a successful kidney transplant will improve both a patient's quality of life and life expectancy compared to receiving long-term dialysis.

Ideal Candidates

  • Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney failure
  • Individuals on long-term dialysis or approaching dialysis dependence
  • Patients with adequate heart and lung function to tolerate surgery
  • Individuals without active infections or untreated malignancies
  • Patients who are able to adhere to lifelong medication and follow-up
  • Suitable recipients with a compatible living or deceased donor

Recovery Timeline

  • Immediate Post-Surgery (Days 1–3): Patient is monitored in the ICU; kidney function, urine output, and vital signs are closely monitored.
  • Hospital Stay (7–10 Days): Gradual mobilisation begins, medications are adjusted, and kidney function stabilises.
  • Early Recovery (Weeks 2–6): Regular follow-ups, blood tests, and medication monitoring continue after discharge.
  • Long-Term Recovery (3 Months Onward): Most patients return to normal daily activities with ongoing immunosuppressive therapy and periodic reviews.

Information related to Treatment

While the lifespan of your transplanted kidney is variable, it can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years or more, depending on factors such as whether your donor was a live or deceased donor, how healthy you are at the time of your transplant (and afterwards), and your ability to stick with your medication plan.

Most people do not require dialysis once their new kidney is functioning; however, some may need temporary dialysis while waiting for it to begin functioning.

Yes; however, the chance of experiencing complications decreases significantly when you are closely monitored post-transplant and followed at least once a year by your transplant team.

In addition to taking lifelong immunosuppressive medication to help prevent your body from rejecting your new kidney, you will also take medications to help regulate your blood pressure and to help prevent you from getting an infection.

Yes, most people experience increased energy, improved quality of life and the ability to return to work and daily activities if they receive appropriate follow-up and care.
