Frequently Asked Questions

A. Several factors may influence the survival rate, including the underlying condition being treated, the patient's general well-being, and the transplant procedure's specifics. Generally, survival after autologous BMT is reported as overall survival (OS)and disease-free survival (DFS).

For most hematologic malignancies, including multiple myeloma and certain lymphomas, five-year overall survival rates are more than 50% and are as high as over 80%.

A. Generally, recovery after BMT can be several months to a year for some people depending on the individual and the kind of BMT:

  • Hospital stay: Typically, a patient remains in the hospital for at least 30 days, whereas in others it might take as long as 100 days in the hospital.
  • Returning home: Once you are discharged from the hospital, you need to remain in the surrounding area of the hospital for at least one to three months.
  • Immune system recovery: It can take several months up to many years before your immune system fully recovers.
  • Cell recovery: Cells in your mouth, stomach, intestine, hair, and muscles will all grow back and may leave you feeling exceedingly tired and weak.
  • Psychological and social well-being: These can be considerably improved within six months and then remain at a higher level than before for up to three years.

A. An autologous transplant requires no donor cells. In the case of an autologous BMT, a patient's own stem cells are used, usually from before chemotherapy or radiation treatment. These are administered back to the patient afterward. This allows his bone marrow and immune system to regain normal function without using donor cells. Allogeneic transplants utilize cells from a donor.

A. It's unlikely you'll be able to work while undergoing bone marrow transplant treatments, as treatment usually takes many months and you'll be going in and out of the hospital:

  1. Hospitalization: You will be hospitalized for at least one month during the transplant.
  2. Fatigue: You will be more tired and also experience difficulty concentrating.
  3. Recovery; It will take considerable periods off work-ofttimes six months, sometimes a year or more.
  4. Cognitive impairment: Cognitive impairment can impair your working ability.

A. Complications of bone marrow transplantation:

  • Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD): The donor cells attack the body of the recipient.
  • Infection: Infections can be severe and are treatable with various medications.
  • Bleeding: It can occur in the lungs, intestines, brain, and other parts of the body.
  • Anemia: It can take place as the blood counts are waiting to recover
  • Mucositis: It is inflammation and soreness in the mouth, throat, oesophagus, and stomach.
  • Gastrointestinal complications: Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may occur.
  • Organ damage: Kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart can be damaged.

Other complications include:

  1. Cataracts
  2. Delayed growth in children
  3. Early menopause
  4. Graft failure
  5. Pneumonitis
  6. Hepatic Veno-occlusive disease (VOD)

In most cases, there are steps that the medical team can take to prevent, manage, and treat complications.

A. Follow-up appointments are crucial following a bone marrow transplant to track the patient's progress and potential for problems. Of course, the frequency of follow-up visits decreases with time, but occasionally they may vary depending on certain situations. Here's a broad overview:

In the initial three months: patients are typically required to visit the clinic weekly or every other week for close monitoring of their blood counts, management of side effects, and potential infection prevention.

This may allow follow-up visits at 2 to 4-week intervals as the patient continues to recover and the risk for near-term complications decreases.

6 Months to 1 Year: Follow-up appointments usually are every 1 to 3 months, depending on the patient's health and status of improvement.

Beyond 1 Year: Many patients are seen at 3 to 6-month intervals, with yearly follow-up appointments as they continue to improve.

Anyone's schedule is quite different, so this is one reason why it's so important to follow the procedure set by the healthcare providers.

A. BMT (bone marrow transplant) may not be the answer to all forms of cancer but it remains a viable option for the treatment of some blood cancer and even some solid tumors. More details include :

  1. Hematological Malignancies: BMT is most often performed in patients suffering from blood cancers such as leukemias including leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma where a blood component resupply is essential in restoring the bone marrow and immune system.
  2. Solid Tumors: BMT is performed even less frequently for solid tumor cases; however, it still may be indicated in some instances for example in high-risk neuroblastoma or testicular cancer but usually along with other treatment modalities.
  3. Specific Indications: BMT in readiness chemotherapy is not for everyone, nor every cancer. The patient's age, the disease type and stage, the general condition, and tolerance to previous therapies are among the factors that influence the decision.

Lastly, a final assessment to understand if a BMT could be advantageous relies on the understanding of a particular medical field possessed by oncologists, who form a team.
