Donor matching involves evaluating blood type, compatible tissue typing, and the donor's overall health.
The surgery involves placing the donor kidney in the lower abdomen and connecting the kidney's arteries and veins to the recipient's blood vessels. The transplant recipient's own non-functioning kidneys are typically left in place, unless they pose an issue for the recipient. The surgical procedure usually lasts for a total of 3–4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
