Festive Season Reality Check: Can Alcohol Damage Your Hips?
Table Of Contents

Alcoholism is the root cause of a number of problems. Damage to the liver, brain, and pancreas are the leading ones. However, people can hardly imagine alcohol posing a risk to the health of their hips. Deteriorating hip health and constant hip pain could ultimately increase the risk of hip replacement.

With every festive season, an increase in the sales and consumption of alcohol is noticed around the world. At the same time, an increase in the incidence of hip pain also takes place. Uncontrolled hip pain could indicate the occurrence of avascular necrosis.

Avascular necrosis, also known as osteonecrosis, is a serious medical condition characterized by the death of bone tissue due to insufficient blood supply. Osteonecrosis of the hip may ultimately lead to the collapse of the hip bone, which may require a hip replacement surgery for treatment.

Current Scenario

Current diagnosis records show that every year hundreds of people as young as 30 years develop osteonecrosis. This is primarily because of excessive smoking and drinking habits. There are many young individuals who have already had a hip replacement surgery in their 30s and 40s because of it.

Alcohol catalyzes the destruction of hip bone by triggering the formation and deposition of fatty material in the blood vessels. This prevents the flow of blood of the hip, triggering the destruction of the bone tissue.
