A Bone Marrow Transplant is the replacement of damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells. Those stem cells can come from the patient (autologous) or from a donor (allogeneic). The transplant then restores the body's ability to produce healthy blood cells, fight infections, and maintain an appropriate immune response.
Conditions commonly treated with BMT include leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, thalassemia, and some immune or genetic disorders. Patients will receive a preparative therapy called conditioning, which is chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy, before transplanting the new stem cells to eliminate the abnormal cells. With good post-transplant care, many patients can achieve long-term remission and regain their quality of life.
