The surgeon first performs cytoreductive surgery to remove tumor deposits. Then, heated chemotherapy is circulated in the abdominal cavity for a predetermined amount of time. The chemotherapy is drained and a closed incision is made.
The HIPEC therapy can take several hours depending on the extent of the tumor spread. The surgery is extensive and the HIPEC therapy, followed by the monitoring phase, takes additional time. During this time, surgical and anesthesia staff will be constantly monitoring the patient.
