HIPEC refers to an advanced form of cancer therapy in conjunction with cytoreductive surgery used in cases of tumours that have metastasised to the abdominal cavity. After surgically removing the visible tumour(s), heated chemotherapy is then perfused through the abdominal cavity to effectively kill off any remaining microscopic cancer cells, allowing for better local control of the tumour(s) and decreased undesirable side effects to the patient’s body.

Ideal Candidates

  • Patients with peritoneal surface malignancies, such as ovarian, colorectal, appendiceal, or gastric cancers.
  • Patients with limited abdominal cancer spread, where complete or near-complete tumor removal is achievable.
  • Individuals in good overall health can tolerate prolonged surgery and recovery.
  • Patients who have not responded adequately to systemic chemotherapy alone.

Information related to Treatment

HIPEC is typically used for patients with ovarian, colon, appendiceal, and pseudomyxoma, as well as patients with select stomach cancers that have made their way into the peritoneal cavity. With HIPEC, your oncologist delivers the heated cancer medication directly into your abdomen (similar to direct injection), therefore allowing a higher concentration of cancer medication at the local site and fewer side effects compared to intravenous chemotherapy.

HIPEC typically only occurs once at the time of surgery, although most patients will require

While HIPEC is a relatively safe procedure, there are always risks. Risks include, but are not limited to, infection, intestinal injury (bowel complications), temporary organ dysfunction, and extended recovery periods, all of which are actively managed by specially trained teams.

Additional systemic chemotherapy may be needed after HIPEC, based on the patient's pathology results and the overall behaviour of the cancer.
