Facial Feminization Surgery: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Facial feminization surgery includes a variety of processes that aim to change the shape of the face so that it appears more feminine. These surgeries can alter the cheekbones, brow, lips, jaw, and chin, as well as do hair transplants or tweak the hairline to create a smaller forehead. Skin-tightening operations, such as facelifts, may potentially be part of the process.

This procedure is frequently used to relieve the distress that arises when a person's gender identity does not correspond to their given sex at birth or their sex-related physical traits, a condition known as gender dysphoria. Facial feminization surgery aligns facial traits with a person's gender identification, which benefits their general well-being.

Why it's performed

Facial features, such as the jaw, brow, and chin, frequently represent distinct sex differences and are visible, unlike other body parts that may be covered. Individuals whose gender identification differs from their sex given at birth may find that changing their facial features is an important step in confirming their gender identity.

  • Discomfort with Assigned Gender
  • Emotional Distress
  • Body Dysphoria

Following are some of the diagnostic tests and procedures done before FFS:

  • Medical History Review: The doctor will ask comprehensive medical history, including any pre-existing medical conditions, previous surgeries, allergies, and medications being taken.
  • Physical Examination: The doctor will do a physical examination to assess overall health and identify any anatomical features that may influence surgical planning.
  • Psychological Evaluation: You will have to meet with a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, to evaluate your mental health status, assess readiness for surgery, and explore the impact of FFS on psychological well-being.
  • Photographic Documentation: The doctor will take photographs of the face from multiple angles to document baseline facial features and help in surgical planning.
  • Laboratory Tests: you will undergo laboratory tests, such as blood tests, and imaging studies, to assess overall health and identify any underlying medical conditions that may affect surgery or recovery.
  • Discussion of Expectations: you can also do a thorough discussion with the surgical team to clarify expectations, and understand the risks associated and benefits of surgery.

The recovery period after facial feminization surgery varies depending on the specific operations performed. In general, patients can expect to return home following surgery. It is best to plan for about two weeks of full relaxation after the treatment. For the next six weeks, it's best to avoid returning to work or indulging in activities that require lifting heavy items.

If forehead surgery is included in the treatment, the surgeon may secure the brows. During the initial healing period, which lasts a few weeks while the anchors are set and the tissue recovers, it is critical to avoid plucking the brow.
