Breast Lift (Mastopexy): Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

A breast lift, known as “Mastopexy”, is a surgical procedure aimed at altering the shape and aesthetics of the breasts. During mastopexy, a plastic surgeon can:

  • Elevate the position of your breasts on your chest.
  • Enhance symmetry between your breasts, making them more alike.
  • Reduce the size of the areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple) and reposition it to face forward rather than downward.
  • Remove excess skin that may have stretched over time.
  • Reshape your breasts for a more rounded appearance.
  • Tighten breast tissue to provide better support for your nipples and areolas.

What reasons lead individuals to undergo breast lift surgery?

As we age, various factors can lead to changes in the appearance of our breasts, including loss of elasticity, stretching, sagging, or drooping. These changes can be attributed to aging, breastfeeding, genetic predisposition, gravity, pregnancy, and significant weight loss, among others.

Mastopexy provides a solution to address these concerns by restoring firmness and a more youthful appearance to the breasts. Additionally, a breast lift can address perceived imperfections such as downward-facing areolas, nipples pointing in different directions, or uneven and asymmetrical breasts.

Classification:

Classification of mastopexy procedures can be categorized based on various factors:

Based on the Techniques:

  • Anchor mastopexy: involves an incision around the areola, vertically down the breast, and horizontally along the inframammary fold.
  • Vertical mastopexy: This involves an incision around the areola and vertically down the breast, but does not include the horizontal incision along the inframammary fold.
  • Periareolar mastopexy: involves an incision around the areola only, resulting in a scar that circles the nipple.

Based on the Degree of Correction:

  • Mild mastopexy
  • Moderate mastopexy
  • Full mastopexy

Based on the Associated Procedures: It includes augmentation and reduction

  • Augmentation-mastopexy: It Combines breast lift with breast augmentation using implants to increase volume and improve shape.
  • Reduction-mastopexy: Combines breast lift with breast reduction to reduce breast size while lifting and reshaping the breasts.

Signs and symptoms following mastopexy (breast lift surgery) may include:

  • Swelling and bruising around the breast area, that is quite common after surgery.
  • Discomfort or pain in the breasts, particularly in the initial days following surgery.
  • Changes in sensation, such as increased or decreased nipple sensitivity, usually resolve over time.
  • Incision-related symptoms for instance redness, tenderness, or itching around the surgical site during the healing process.
  • Changes in breast appearance, including firmness and shape, as the breasts heal and settle into their new position.
  • Scarring around the incision sites gradually fades over time but may remain visible.

Before undergoing breast lift surgery, several diagnostic tests and evaluations may be conducted to ensure the procedure is safe and appropriate for the individual. These may include:

  • Physical Examination: A thorough physical examination, including assessment of breast size, shape, symmetry, skin quality, and nipple position, is performed by the surgeon.
  • Medical History: Before undergoing surgery Doctor will assess any underlying health conditions, previous surgeries, allergies, medications, and lifestyle factors and then let the patient know whether they are eligible or not.
  • Breast Imaging: Depending on age, risk factors, and individual circumstances, mammography or breast ultrasound may be recommended to evaluate breast tissue health, detect any abnormalities, and assess breast density.
  • Breast Measurements: The surgeon will Precisely measure breast dimensions, such as width, height, and projection, which may be taken to guide the surgical plan and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Surgical Consultation: A consultation with the surgeon allows for discussion of treatment goals, expectations, potential risks and complications, and the selection of appropriate surgical techniques.

Recovery from breast lift surgery involves an initial phase of managing discomfort, swelling, and bruising, typically requiring rest and avoiding strenuous activities. Pain medication prescribed by the surgeon can alleviate any discomfort during this period, while patients are encouraged to follow post-operative instructions diligently to support the healing process. Wearing a surgical bra or compression garment may be recommended to provide additional support to the breasts as they heal.

As healing progresses over the following weeks, swelling and bruising gradually subside, allowing patients to return to work and resume light activities within a week or two. However, strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise should be avoided for several weeks to ensure optimal healing. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are essential to monitor progress, address any concerns, and assess the final results of the procedure, which may take several months to fully manifest as swelling resolves and the breasts settle into their new position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does breast lift affect breastfeeding?

A: Mastopexy has no impact on a woman’s ability to breastfeed. This cosmetic surgery for breast lifting can be conducted in either of the cases – before pregnancy or after pregnancy. Nursing mothers are able to breastfeed their babies normally after undergoing this safe and effective procedure to lift breasts.

Q: How long does a breast lift surgery effects last?

A: Mastopexy helps lift breasts to the desired location. However, it does not prevent breasts from sagging again in the future due to natural events in a woman’s life such as childbirth and pregnancy.

Although mastopexy lasts a long time, women undergoing this procedure may still feel the need for a “touch up” procedure to lift their breasts up again or improve their look. This touch-up procedure, however, is not similar to full-fledged mastopexy.

Q: What is the recovery time after a breast lift with implants surgery?

A: The total recovery time may vary from one person to the other. However, on an average, it may take around seven to ten days for an individual to recover from the surgery. For some patients, the recovery time lasts for about six to eight weeks.

Q: How much time does a breast lift with augmentation take?

A: It may take anywhere from 90 to 150 minutes.

Q: How much time does breast reduction with lift take?

A: Breast reduction and lift may take a litter longer than breast lift with augmentation. Typically, this surgery mat last for three to four hours.
