A ruptured eardrum, or tympanic membrane perforation, occurs when the eardrum, a thin membrane separating the outer ear from the middle ear, is ruptured. The eardrum transmits sound vibrations while protecting the middle ear from water, bacteria, and foreign materials. The perforation of the eardrum may occur as a result of an ear infection, sudden pressure changes, trauma, or penetration of an object into the ear canal. Most small perforations heal naturally, but some may require treatment by an ENT specialist because of their size and the complications they can cause.
Timely assessment helps identify the perforation's size and location, evaluate hearing loss, and detect associated middle-ear or inner-ear injury. Most uncomplicated perforations heal spontaneously with appropriate care. Keeping the ear dry and avoiding objects or unprescribed drops can reduce the risk of complications. Persistent perforation, ongoing discharge, significant hearing loss, severe vertigo, or facial weakness requires prompt medical assessment.
Causes
Risk Factors
Eardrum Patching: A patching procedure may treat selected persistent or small perforations. The patch supports tympanic membrane healing and may sometimes need to be repeated.
Tympanoplasty : Surgeons may recommend this when the perforation persists, particularly if it does not close after an appropriate observation period or is associated with chronic discharge or hearing problems.

Repair of Associated Middle-Ear Damage: If the ossicles are damaged or displaced, or if deeper ear structures are significantly injured, additional surgery may be required. Severe hearing loss or persistent vertigo after trauma warrants early ENT assessment.
