A ruptured eardrum, or tympanic membrane perforation, occurs when the eardrum, a thin membrane separating the outer ear from the middle ear, is ruptured. The eardrum plays a key role in transmitting sound vibrations while protecting the middle ear from water, bacteria, and foreign materials. The perforation of the eardrum may occur as a result of an ear infection, sudden pressure changes, trauma, or penetration of an object into the ear canal. Most small perforations heal naturally, while some may require treatment by an ENT specialist because of their size and the level of complications they cause.
Timely evaluation is important because a ruptured eardrum can be associated with hearing loss, tinnitus, infection, or injury to the tiny middle-ear bones or inner ear. Most uncomplicated perforations heal without surgery, but keep the ear dry and monitor it as it heals. Persistent perforation, ongoing discharge, significant hearing loss, severe vertigo, or evidence of deeper ear injury may require specialist assessment and surgical repair.

Eardrum Patching: Selected persistent or small perforations may be treated with an office-based patching procedure. The patch supports healing of the tympanic membrane and may sometimes need to be repeated.
Tympanoplasty : Surgeons may recommend this when the perforation persists, particularly if it does not close after an appropriate observation period or is associated with chronic discharge or hearing problems. Tympanoplasty uses a tissue graft to close the eardrum defect.
