Acute Coronary Syndrome occurs when blood flow through a coronary artery is suddenly reduced or blocked, most commonly because an atherosclerotic plaque ruptures or erodes and a blood clot forms. Depending on the severity and duration of reduced blood flow, ACS may present as unstable angina, NSTEMI, or STEMI. ACS is a medical emergency that requires prompt evaluation and treatment.
Timely treatment is critical because prolonged interruption of blood flow can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle. Rapid recognition, ECG assessment, appropriate medicines, and restoration of coronary blood flow when indicated can limit myocardial injury, reduce complications, and improve survival. Seek emergency medical care immediately when ACS is suspected.
Causes
Risk Factors
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI): Coronary angiography followed by angioplasty and stent placement may rapidly restore blood flow, particularly in patients with STEMI or selected high-risk ACS.
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) : CABG may be considered when coronary anatomy is unsuitable for PCI or when extensive or complex disease requires surgical revascularisation.
