Lung lobectomy – surgical removal of one or more lobes of the lung, is commonly performed as an option for early-stage lung cancer (in most cases), localised lung infections and certain types of lung tissue damage. This procedure can be performed using open thoracotomy (larger incision) or minimally invasive surgery, e.g., via video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) or robotic-assisted techniques.

Removing only the diseased lung lobe will allow continued use of the unaffected portions of the lung and is likely to be successful in treating the disease (removal of the cancerous or infected lobe). Which technique is used is determined by the size and location of the tumor and the overall health status of the patient. Lobectomy (removal of a lobe of the lung) is often considered to be the "gold standard" for successful treatment of a majority of operable lung cancers.

Ideal Candidates

  • Patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer confined to one lobe
  • Individuals with localised lung tumors, infections, or benign growths
  • Patients with adequate lung function to tolerate partial lung removal
  • Those without widespread cancer spread or severe, uncontrolled comorbidities
  • Patients fit for surgery after a comprehensive cardiopulmonary evaluation

  • Weeks 1 and 2: Patients will see gradual improvements in their breathing and mobility after surgery. Chest tubes will be removed as healing continues.
  • Weeks 3-6: Patients will return to light daily activity levels, continue using breathing exercises, and attend follow-up visits with the physician.
  • Weeks 6-8: Most patients will return to normal activity levels as their lung function continues to improve.

Information related to Treatment

Lung lobectomy is considered to be a significant thoracic operation; however, with the use of minimally invasive strategies, there has been a tremendous reduction in risks, pain, and time to recovery.

For most patients, sufficient remaining lung tissue compensates for the removal of one or more lung lobes, and the patient can adapt. Adaptation generally takes time and is enhanced by rehabilitation.

The process typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the level of complexity and the method of operation.

Whether you will require chemotherapy or radiation therapy will depend upon your cancer stage and the results of the pathology report generated by your surgical team. Patients with cancer stage III or IV will likely require some form of additional therapy.

The potential risks of a lobectomy include infection, bleeding, air leaks, or difficulty in breathing; all of which are carefully handled by the surgical team and the intensive care (ICU) team.
