Lung lobectomy – surgical removal of one or more lobes of the lung, is commonly performed as an option for early-stage lung cancer (in most cases), localised lung infections and certain types of lung tissue damage. This procedure can be performed using open thoracotomy (larger incision) or minimally invasive surgery, e.g., via video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) or robotic-assisted techniques.
Removing only the diseased lung lobe will allow continued use of the unaffected portions of the lung and is likely to be successful in treating the disease (removal of the cancerous or infected lobe). Which technique is used is determined by the size and location of the tumor and the overall health status of the patient. Lobectomy (removal of a lobe of the lung) is often considered to be the "gold standard" for successful treatment of a majority of operable lung cancers.
