Brachytherapy is an internal radiation treatment designed to deliver radiation close to or within a tumor. The technique can be used for selected cancers and may provide a concentrated radiation dose to the treatment area while limiting exposure to surrounding tissues. Depending on the treatment plan, the radioactive source may be delivered using temporary catheters or applicators, or implanted permanently in selected cases. Before treatment, the radiation oncology team evaluates the tumor and uses imaging and computerized planning to determine the appropriate source position and radiation dose.
