A Single-Chamber AICD uses one lead, typically placed in the right ventricle, to sense and treat abnormal rhythms. It is suitable for patients whose arrhythmia originates primarily in the ventricles and who do not require pacing support in other chambers.
It is recommended for patients with severe heart failure, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, or a history of cardiac arrest. It’s also advised for those at high risk of sudden cardiac death due to weak heart muscle function.
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia with sedation. A small incision is made below the collarbone to insert the device and thread the lead into the heart through a vein. The device is tested before being secured under the skin.
