A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)- Autologus- Myeloma is the replacement of damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells. Those stem cells can come from the patient (autologous) or from a donor (allogeneic). The transplant then restores the body's ability to produce healthy blood cells, fight infections, and maintain an appropriate immune response.
Conditions commonly treated with BMT include leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, thalassemia, and some immune or genetic disorders. Patients will receive a preparative therapy called conditioning, which is chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy, before transplanting the new stem cells to eliminate the abnormal cells. With good post-transplant care, many patients can achieve long-term remission and regain their quality of life. A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)- Autologus- Myeloma is performed when someone's bone marrow is unhealthy, damaged or cannot perform its function. Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)- Autologus- Myelomas help treat cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma; conditions in which the bone marrow fails to make blood cells properly, or certain genetic disorders. The transplant allows the body to regenerate a healthy blood cell system and regain its immunity.
The two main types of BMT are Autologous BMT, which uses the patient's own stem cells for the transplant, and Allogeneic BMT, which uses stem cells from a related or unrelated donor. In rare instances, umbilical cord blood has also been used. The type is determined based on the disease being treated and the patient's condition.
Bone marrow stem cells are initially harvested from the patient or donor. Next, the patient undergoes conditioning therapy (chemotherapy with or without radiation) to clear any diseased cells. Lastly, the harvested stem cells are infused into the patient through a vein in the arm, similar to receiving a blood transfusion. Over time, these stem cells will migrate to the patient's bone marrow and begin to generate healthy blood cells.
The recovery period typically lasts several months. In the early weeks, patients are kept in a specialised unit where they are monitored for infections, blood counts and the progress of the transplant. As their immune system repairs itself, patients gradually return to their normal activities. Complete immune recovery may take up to a year and possibly longer.
Risks include infection, graft-versus-host disease (in allogeneic transplants), organ issues, or delayed engraftment. Although these complications may be serious, transplant centres across the country are utilising cutting-edge protocols and monitoring to keep these complications to a minimum during a patient’s recovery and to maximise patient safety.
