FAQ's Related to Urologist

What does a Urologist do?

As a physician, it is a urologist who undertakes treatment of health conditions present in urinary tract and of male reproductive system. A referral to a urologist is forthcoming from your doctor if the health condition is of adrenal glands, bladder, kidneys, urethra or ureters. The expertise of these doctors in treating conditions of seminal vesicles, penis, epididymis, prostate, and testes in men is well known and lauded. Cancers of prostate gland, testicles, kidneys or bladder and bladder prolapse, enlarged prostate are all taken care of by a urologist.

What are the tests required before and during consultation for a Urologist?

Let us have a look at the routinely done Urology tests:

  • Pyelogram
  • Cystography
  • CT scan
  • Ultrasound of the kidney, prostate/rectal sonogram

Before beginning the physical exam the doctor begins the process by asking you questions regarding your medical history and going through the reports. The physical exam consists of checking the urinary tract, penis or testicles as well if need be and doing the digital rectal exam. The blood and urine tests are an essential component of the consultation with the doctor and give a complete picture of the various conditions or cancers. The other category of testing involves the usage of imaging techniques such as Ultrasound, X-ray scans and CT scan.

When should you go to see a Urologist?

The foremost reason for you to go to see a urologist is urinary difficulties and some of these are:

  1. Frequent urination during day or night time
  2. Burning or pain while urinating
  3. Difficulty in initiation of urine
  4. Poor stream of urine
  5. Sensation of incomplete voiding

Adding to this are several more reasons that make a consult with a urologist a must have and they are:

  1. Deranged PSA test results
  2. Blood in urine
  3. Pain in the flanks or back
  4. Urinary stone disease
  5. Testicular swelling or pain
  6. Urinary tract infections
  7. Pain in the penis
  8. Sexual dysfunction
  9. Male infertility

A proper evaluation should happen as soon as possible before the symptoms indicate a worsening of the health condition. A consultation with the urologist becomes necessary to judge whether the health condition is acute or chronic and to decide upon the right treatment path.
