Later, in 1986, he completed his MS in General Surgery from Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry. In 1989, he was awarded M.Ch. in Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He has more than 30 years of experience in performing cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Rao is an expert in performing coronary artery bypass through multi arterial grafting. He is an experienced surgeon performing various types of heart surgeries with an impeccable success rate. Dr. Rao has gain expertise in performing mitral valve repair and redo CABG surgeries along with on-pump CABG and off-pump CABG. He is also an active member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Various research articles of Dr. Rao have been published in various national and international journals.
