Mommy Makeover: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

The mommy makeover is a popular combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to address common concerns experienced by women after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The mommy makeover helps women address various issues that can arise from pregnancy and breastfeeding, improving their physical appearance. These procedures are custom-designed to meet each woman's specific needs and requirements. The process typically starts with breast and abdomen contouring, with additional procedures added as needed to achieve the desired results.

The breasts and abdomen are the primary areas affected by motherhood, so a mommy makeover often focuses on these regions. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the breasts can enlarge significantly, sometimes by a full cup size or more. However, once these stages are over, there can be a significant loss of breast volume and noticeable sagging. Throughout pregnancy, the abdominal muscles, skin, and tissues stretch to accommodate the growing baby. Unfortunately, after childbirth, these layers may not return to their taut, pre-pregnancy shape.

Types

There are two main types of mommy makeover surgeries: surgical and non-surgical.

Surgical Mommy Makeover Procedures:

For the abdominal area:

  • Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
  • Liposuction
  • Skin tightening procedures

For the breast area:

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
  • Breast Reduction

Non-Surgical Mommy Makeover:

Non-surgical options typically focus on non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments to improve body contour and appearance.

The most common surgical mommy makeover combinations involve pairing a tummy tuck with either breast augmentation or a breast lift. These procedures are tailored to address specific aesthetic goals following pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Before undergoing a mommy makeover, individuals generally experience various physical changes and concerns that motivate them to consider the procedure. Here are some common signs and symptoms that may lead someone to seek a mommy makeover:

Breast Changes include:

  • Sagging or drooping breasts
  • Loss of breast volume or deflation
  • Stretched areolas or downward-pointing nipples
  • Asymmetry between the breasts

Abdominal Changes:

  • Loose or sagging abdominal skin
  • Stretch marks on the abdomen
  • Separated or weakened abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • persistent abdominal fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

Body Contour Changes:

  • Stubborn fat deposits in areas such as the hips, thighs, and flanks
  • Loss of waist definition
  • Overall dissatisfaction with body shape and contour

Before undergoing a mommy makeover, several diagnostic steps and tests are generally performed to ensure the patient's health and readiness for surgery. Here are the common diagnostic procedures involved:

Medical History: The surgeon reviews the patient's medical history, including past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, and previous pregnancies.

Physical Examination: A comprehensive physical exam assesses the areas targeted for surgery, such as the breasts, abdomen, and other body parts. This helps evaluate skin elasticity, muscle tone, and overall health.

Blood Tests: These tests evaluate overall health and screen for conditions that could affect surgery or recovery. Common blood tests include:

Complete Blood Count (CBC), Blood chemistry panel, Coagulation studies

Imaging Studies: these include

Mammogram: Recommended for breast surgery to assess breast health and detect any abnormalities.

Ultrasound: Used to evaluate breast tissue or other targeted areas, especially for assessing skin and underlying structures.

The mommy makeover is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing you to recover in the comfort of your own home. Your surgeon may suggest an overnight recovery suite for additional support during the initial 24 hours.

Recovery can span from one to two weeks, depending on the specific procedures involved in your mommy makeover. Expect to experience soreness, bruising, and swelling during this time.

Due to fatigue and tenderness after the procedure, you'll need assistance with household tasks for several days. Enlist help from a family member or friend to manage routine chores during your recovery period.
