Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Removal: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Laparoscopic gallbladder removal is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove a diseased or inflamed gallbladder. This small organ lies just below the liver in the right upper abdomen and stores bile, a liquid produced by the liver. Bile helps in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats by being released into the small bowel.

While the gallbladder plays a role in digestion, it is not essential for normal digestive function, and its removal is considered if it becomes significantly diseased or inflamed. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, as it is formally known, involves making small incisions and using specialized tools to perform the surgery, making it the most common approach for gallbladder removal.

Reasons:

The prime reason for having a laparoscopic gallbladder removal is Cholelithiasis, the presence of gallstones. Apart from this patient might also need this surgery because of the following

  • Biliary dyskinesia: It occurs when the gallbladder doesn't empty bile properly.
  • Choledocholithiasis: This happens when the gallstones move to the common bile duct and cause a blockage
  • Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder.
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas, often related to gallstones.

Laparoscopic surgery is preferred over open surgery due to smaller incisions, which reduce the risk of infection, and bleeding, and shorten recovery time.

Before undergoing laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, patients experience signs and symptoms related to gallbladder issues. These may include:

Abdominal Pain: severe pain in the upper right abdomen, which might radiate to the back or shoulder.

Nausea and Vomiting: Frequent nausea or vomiting, especially after eating fatty foods.

Feeling of fullness or bloating in the abdomen.

Indigestion: Indigestion, heartburn, or gas.

Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes, indicating a possible bile duct obstruction.

Fever and Chills: Indicating a possible infection, such as cholecystitis.

Biliary Colic: Sudden and intense pain due to gallstones blocking the bile ducts, often occurring after meals.

Here are some of the diagnostic tests that are used to detect Gall bladder stones:

  • Ultrasound
  • HIDA Scan (Cholescintigraphy) Evaluates the function of the gallbladder by tracking the flow of bile.
  • CT Scan.
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
  • Some blood tests are also performed such as Complete Blood Count (CBC), Liver Function Tests (LFTs), Pancreatic Enzymes
  • Chest X-rays in some patients

Recovery after laparoscopic gallbladder surgery involves a shorter and less painful recovery duration as compared to open surgery. Most patients can go home the same day or the day after the procedure. They are usually able to return to light activities within a week and resume normal activities, including work, within two to four weeks. Most people only have minimal pain and discomfort, which can be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers. It's important to follow the surgeon's post-operative care instructions, including diet modifications and activity restrictions, to ensure a smooth recovery.
