Hand Microsurgery: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Hand Microsurgery also called “Microvascular hand surgery “is a highly specialized procedure focusing on repairing or reconstructing small blood vessels within the hand. It aims to restore proper blood circulation, repair injured tissues, and enhance hand function, particularly in cases of injury, disease, or congenital anomalies.

This technique is utilized by many plastic surgeons for specialized procedures, including the transfer of tissue from one part of the body to another (free tissue transfer), the reattachment of severed parts (replantation), and composite tissue transplantation.

The procedure is commonly performed for nerve repair, reattachment of a severed finger, tendon repair etc. It is performed by an expert surgeon specializing in microsurgery or microvascular surgery. It is also used in the treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Dupuytren's contracture.

Types of Hand Microsurgery:

  • Microvascular Surgery
  • Nerve Repair and Reconstruction
  • Tendon Repair and Reconstruction
  • Joint Reconstruction
  • Soft Tissue Reconstruction
  • Dupuytren's Contracture Surgery
  • Hand Transplantation

Signs and symptoms before a head microscopy procedure may include:

  • Scalp Issues
  • Hair Loss
  • Itchy or Irritated Scalp
  • Infection Signs
  • Skin Lesion

  • Medical History Review
  • Physical Examination
  • Imaging Studies: including X-rays, MRIs, or CT Scan
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG): These tests assess nerve function and muscle activity, they help diagnose nerve compression, injury, or neuropathy.
  • Blood Tests: Routine blood work to analyze overall health, rule out infections, and evaluate blood clotting function if surgery is planned.
  • Diagnostic Injections: it is performed to confirm the source of inflammation such as corticosteroids.

The recovery time for the procedure is minimal. The patient is advised to keep his/her arm elevated for the next 3-5 days. This ensures minimal swelling and pain. It is also essential to keep the wound dressings dry and clean. Physical movement in areas other than the procedure area is recommended to ensure that there is no stiffness. Physical therapy is usually prescribed to gain full function of the hand. Following all postoperative instructions including cleansing, taking prescribed medications and hand therapy exercises ensures a proper speedy recovery.
