Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a life-threatening heart rhythm in which the ventricles develop rapid, chaotic electrical activity instead of contracting in a coordinated manner. As a result, the heart cannot pump blood effectively to the brain and other vital organs. VF can cause sudden cardiac arrest and requires immediate emergency treatment.
VF is different from ventricular tachycardia, although ventricular tachycardia can sometimes deteriorate into ventricular fibrillation. Without prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation, VF can be fatal within minutes.
Ventricular fibrillation is a medical emergency, and every minute without effective defibrillation can significantly reduce the chance of survival. Immediate treatment generally involves calling emergency medical services, starting high-quality CPR, using an automated external defibrillator (AED) when available, delivering an electrical shock to restore an organised heart rhythm, and providing advanced cardiac life support while treating the underlying cause. After circulation is restored, patients may require intensive monitoring and additional treatment to reduce the risk of another cardiac arrest.
Causes
Risk Factors
Defibrillation: An AED or manual defibrillator delivers an electrical shock to stop VF and allow the heart's normal electrical activity to resume.
Coronary Revascularisation: If VF is associated with an acute coronary blockage, urgent coronary angiography and appropriate revascularisation may be required.
Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) : An ICD continuously monitors heart rhythm and can deliver an electrical shock or pacing therapy if a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia occurs.

Catheter Ablation : In selected patients with recurrent ventricular arrhythmias, catheter ablation can target abnormal electrical circuits or scar-related areas responsible for arrhythmia.

Mechanical Circulatory Support: In selected cases of refractory cardiac arrest or severe cardiogenic shock, specialised centres may consider technologies such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
