Urinary retention is a condition in which a person cannot completely empty the bladder. It may be acute, causing a sudden inability to urinate, or chronic, in which the bladder gradually fails to empty fully. Urinary retention can result from a urinary tract blockage, weak bladder muscle activity, nerve-related problems, certain medicines, or other underlying conditions.
