Follicular lymphoma is a type of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that develops from abnormal B lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell involved in the immune system. It is generally considered an indolent, or slow-growing, lymphoma, although its behaviour can vary between individuals. Follicular lymphoma commonly affects lymph nodes but can also involve the bone marrow, spleen, and other tissues.
Timely diagnosis and appropriate management can help determine the extent and biological characteristics of follicular lymphoma and guide treatment decisions. Because many cases grow slowly, immediate treatment is not always necessary. Some patients with asymptomatic, low-burden disease may be monitored through active surveillance, or watchful waiting.
