The technical definition of a chemo port is a small medical device that is inserted under the patient's skin (commonly in the area of the chest) to achieve a long-term pathway into the patient’s vascular system. It provides access through a thin, soft tube (catheter) inserted into a large vein to safely and comfortably administer chemotherapy agents or fluids, or to withdraw blood samples.
This method of administration requires minimal intrusion since it is done under local anaesthesia or light sedation, and it minimises the need for multiple (repeated) needle punctures to establish venous access, reduces the risk of vein damage and limits the patient’s discomfort while undergoing long-term cancer therapy.
