Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure that creates a new path for blood to reach the heart. Coronary arteries become blocked or narrowed, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardium), causing chest pain (angina). When blood flow to the heart is blocked, the surgeon will use a blood vessel from the chest, leg, or arm to bypass (go around) the blocked coronary artery, allowing oxygenated blood to reach the heart muscle.

CABG helps provide more oxygen (blood flow) to the heart muscle, which can help relieve angina and reduce the chances of having a heart attack. CABG may be used if multiple arteries are blocked, angioplasty is not appropriate, or the blockages in the arteries supplying the heart are too severe for other procedures.

Ideal Candidates

  • People with blocked coronary arteries
  • There is evidence that people have significant (uncontrolled) angina (chest pain) that has not improved with medications
  • People who have left the main coronary artery disease
  • Patients (diabetics) who have complex coronary artery blockages
  • People with heart function that is depressed because of insufficient blood flow (poor blood supply)
  • Patients who have failed (those who either have had stents placed already and have since passed away, or are not appropriate) are not able to be treated with stents.

Information related to Treatment

CABG is an open-heart procedure that is quite common, as well as having high success rates when it is done at an established centre that has experience with performing this surgery.

Depending on the number of arteries being bypassed and the patient's overall health, CABG typically takes 3 to 6 hours.

Under healthy living conditions, arterial grafts tend to stay open longer than vein grafts.

Yes. To maintain your heart health, you may need to take medications such as blood thinners, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and blood pressure medications.

The majority of people recovering from CABG can resume routine activities 6-8 weeks after their procedure; however, full recovery may take as long as 3 months, depending on how quickly they rehabilitate and their overall health.
