Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure that creates a new path for blood to reach the heart. Coronary arteries become blocked or narrowed, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardium), causing chest pain (angina). When blood flow to the heart is blocked, the surgeon will use a blood vessel from the chest, leg, or arm to bypass (go around) the blocked coronary artery, allowing oxygenated blood to reach the heart muscle.
CABG helps provide more oxygen (blood flow) to the heart muscle, which can help relieve angina and reduce the chances of having a heart attack. CABG may be used if multiple arteries are blocked, angioplasty is not appropriate, or the blockages in the arteries supplying the heart are too severe for other procedures.
