Breast-conservative surgery is the surgical treatment of early-stage breast cancer that leaves most of the breast intact after removing the cancerous tumor, and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue to help ensure that all of the cancer has been successfully removed. This operation takes place under general anaesthesia, and usually includes removal of the lymph nodes in the armpit for the purposes of determining cancer staging. Advanced imaging and techniques for localising the tumour are utilised by the surgeon during the procedure to enable the least invasive removal possible.
The oncoplastic techniques are employed to help reconstruct the breast as closely as possible to the natural shape after completing the BCS surgery. The average length of time spent in hospital after having BCS surgery is usually quite short, and the majority of patients will go on to receive post-operative radiation therapy to reduce the risk of developing a local recurrence of breast cancer.
