Breast-conservative surgery is the surgical treatment of early-stage breast cancer that leaves most of the breast intact after removing the cancerous tumor, and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue to help ensure that all of the cancer has been successfully removed. This operation takes place under general anaesthesia, and usually includes removal of the lymph nodes in the armpit for the purposes of determining cancer staging. Advanced imaging and techniques for localising the tumour are utilised by the surgeon during the procedure to enable the least invasive removal possible.

The oncoplastic techniques are employed to help reconstruct the breast as closely as possible to the natural shape after completing the BCS surgery. The average length of time spent in hospital after having BCS surgery is usually quite short, and the majority of patients will go on to receive post-operative radiation therapy to reduce the risk of developing a local recurrence of breast cancer.

Ideal Candidates

  • Patients diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, where the tumor is small relative to breast size
  • Individuals with a single tumor confined to one area of the breast
  • Patients without widespread cancer involvement or multiple tumors in different quadrants
  • Women who are medically fit to undergo surgery and post-operative radiotherapy
  • Patients who prefer breast preservation over complete breast removal
  • Individuals with no contraindications to radiation therapy
  • Patients with clear imaging showing well-defined tumor margins

Information related to Treatment

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is the removal of the cancerous portion of the breast along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue, thus preserving much of the remaining breast tissue. The results from BCS and mastectomy for patients diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer are virtually the same when BCS is performed on eligible patients.

Patients who have breast-conserving surgery typically have early-stage, localised breast tumors that can be removed without causing large alterations to the overall breast shape.

Radiation therapy is routinely performed following breast-conserving surgery in order to decrease the risk of the cancer returning in the breast.

Patients usually experience mild to moderate levels of pain during their recovery from breast-conserving surgery. Most will recover from the procedure fairly quickly.

Most patients undergoing breast-conserving surgery will have good cosmetic results with minimal visible scarring using modern oncoplastic techniques.

The expected rates of cancer recurrence following breast-conserving surgery with radiation therapy and appropriate medication treatment are very similar to mastectomy rates for patients eligible for BCS.
