Breast-conservative surgery is the surgical treatment of early-stage breast cancer that leaves most of the breast intact after removing the cancerous tumor, and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue to help ensure that all of the cancer has been successfully removed. This operation takes place under general anaesthesia, and usually includes removal of the lymph nodes in the armpit for the purposes of determining cancer staging. Advanced imaging and techniques for localising the tumour are utilised by the surgeon during the procedure to enable the least invasive removal possible.

The oncoplastic techniques are employed to help reconstruct the breast as closely as possible to the natural shape after completing the BCS surgery.   • Weeks 2 - 3: Surgical wounds will heal; you may have stitches removed (if applicable); & your arm will have increased range of motion.

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is the removal of the cancerous portion of the breast along with a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue, thus preserving much of the remaining breast tissue. The results from BCS and mastectomy for patients diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer are virtually the same when BCS is performed on eligible patients.

Patients who have breast-conserving surgery typically have early-stage, localised breast tumors that can be removed without causing large alterations to the overall breast shape.

Radiation therapy is routinely performed following breast-conserving surgery in order to decrease the risk of the cancer returning in the breast.
