The technique of providing synchronous operation for a failing heart is known as Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator (CRT-D). An implantable cardiac resynchronization therapy-implanted defibrillator (CRT-D) is a type of implantable cardioverter defibrillator that can be implanted under the dermis of the chest area, typically beneath the clavicle in patients who require advanced treatment for both heart failure and arrhythmias. This device provides continuous monitoring of heart rhythms and synchronizes the motor action of the two halves of the heart.
Once an irregular or threateningly rapid arrhythmia occurs, the implanted device delivers an electrical shock to restore the heart to its original electrical pattern. In addition to improving overall function of the heart, CRT-D therapy will reduce the physical effects of heart failure, decrease the number of hospitalizations related to the heart, improve longevity, and ultimately, improve quality of life for patients with either heart failure or arrhythmia.
