An LVAD is a mechanical pump implanted to assist a weakened heart in maintaining adequate circulation. It may be used as a bridge to transplantation, bridge to recovery in selected cases, or long-term destination therapy. A multidisciplinary heart-failure team evaluates heart function, other medical conditions, and transplant eligibility before implantation.
