Cardiac Valve Replacement is a surgical operation performed to address severely damaged or non-functioning heart valves that can no longer be repaired. Conditions such as valve stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leakage) force the heart to work harder and can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, or heart failure. A new valve, whether mechanical or biological, can help restore blood flow and improve heart function.

The procedure can either be performed using traditional open-heart surgery or using minimally invasive approaches based on the person’s condition and the type of valve used. Mechanical or biological Cardiac Valve Replacement today is a very successful procedure, and many patients report better energy levels and quality of life with fewer symptoms. With early and appropriate care and follow-up, most patients return to activities of daily living. The Cardiac Valve Replacement procedure is available at NMC Royal Hospital, Khalifa City in United Arab Emirates.

Information related to Treatment

A heart Cardiac Valve Replacement is recommended when a heart valve is either too narrow or leaks too much and therefore cannot be repaired. Severe valve disease disrupts normal blood flow through the heart and causes the heart to work harder, resulting in symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or lightheadedness. A heart Cardiac Valve Replacement is necessary to restore normal blood flow and to prevent long-term damage to the heart.

There are two major types of heart valves used as a replacement: mechanical valves, which are durable, long-lasting, but require that you take a blood thinner for the rest of your life; and biological (or tissue) valves, which are made of human or animal tissue and do not require you to take a blood thinner for the rest of your life, however, they may need to be replaced in 10–20 years.

The Cardiac Valve Replacement surgery will occur either by open-heart surgery or a minimally invasive route, either small incision surgery or transcatheter Cardiac Valve Replacement (known as TAVR). The damaged valve is removed and the new valve is placed and secured in the correct location under general anesthesia. The procedure can take anywhere from 2–4 hours.

The risks may include bleeding, infection, arrhythmia, blood clots, and anesthesia complications. Mechanical valves require lifelong anticoagulation, which has a risk of bleeding. Fortunately, with modern surgical techniques and a high level of care, serious complications are uncommon.

Hospital recovery is usually 5-7 days. Afterward, some patients may take weeks to regain their strength, depending on the type of surgery. Cardiac rehabilitation is generally advised to help healing, increase stamina, and advise about safe levels of activity. Most people return to work and their daily lives after 6-10 weeks.
