During TURBT, a resectoscope (a thin, tube-like instrument with a camera and surgical loop) is inserted through the urethra—the natural urinary passage—into the bladder. The surgeon carefully removes or burns the tumor tissue using electric current or laser energy, without making any external incision. The removed tissue is sent for pathological examination to determine the stage and grade of the cancer.

Most patients can go home within 1–2 days after the procedure. Mild discomfort, burning sensation during urination, or blood in the urine may persist for a few days. Normal activities can generally be resumed within 1 week, while complete healing may take 2–3 weeks.
A urinary catheter may be temporarily placed to help drain urine for 1–2 days. Patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids to flush out the bladder. The biopsy results guide further treatment, such as intravesical chemotherapy or immunotherapy if required, to prevent recurrence.
