Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the medical term for Lap Cholestectomy, often referred to as "keyhole" surgery. This operation can be indicated to remove the gallbladder for gallstones, infection, or inflammation (cholecystitis). It is done by making 3 small incisions and inserting a small camera in the abdomen; the gallbladder is then removed without making a large surgical cut. Laparoscopic approaches minimize pain, recovery time, and the length of hospital stays.
The surgery provides symptom relief from gallbladder disease such as abdominal pain, nausea, or discomfort, and it also helps to prevent future attacks. In addition, it helps to prevent a blockage or infection from the gallbladder. Surgery is suggested with gallstones, inflammation, or recurrent gallbladder pain with the goal of preventing future attacks or complications. The surgery will provide an opportunity to return to comfortable digestion without gallbladder pain or as an impediment to normal life.
The surgeon will traverse small incisions and insert a camera and instruments into your abdominal cavity through the incisions.
