A Laminectomy is a type of surgery for alleviating pressure on the spinal cord or nerves that could be caused by a variety of conditions including spinal stenosis, herniated discs, bone spurs, or age-related changes. In a Laminectomy, the surgeon removes the lamina, which is the back portion of a vertebra, to give the nerves more space. Removing the lamina allows for decompression of the nerves which may help resolve pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the back, arms or legs.
The ultimate goal is to enhance mobility, decompress the nerves, and get the patient back to normal activities. Laminectomies may be completed alone or in combination with spinal fusion if the spine will benefit from additional stability.
