The Fontan Procedure is a complex congenital heart surgery performed in children with single-ventricle heart defects, where one of the heart’s pumping chambers (ventricles) is underdeveloped or nonfunctional. It is usually the final stage of a series of surgeries that include the Norwood and Glenn procedures.
The goal of the Fontan Procedure is to redirect venous (oxygen-poor) blood directly to the lungs, bypassing the heart, so the functioning ventricle can pump oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. During the surgery, the inferior vena cava (IVC) — which carries blood from the lower body — is connected directly to the pulmonary arteries, completing the separation of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood flow.
Many international patients choose to undergo Fontan at Amrita Hospital in India, where advanced expertise, modern technology, and world-class patient care ensure excellent outcomes.

Yes. The Fontan Procedure is a well-established and life-saving surgery performed at advanced pediatric cardiac centers. As with any major heart surgery, risks such as bleeding, infection, irregular heart rhythm, fluid buildup, or clot formation can occur, but these complications are rare when performed by experienced surgeons.
It is done in children born with single-ventricle heart defects (such as tricuspid atresia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, or double inlet left ventricle). The surgery helps improve oxygenation and relieves the heart from excessive strain.
The surgeon connects the inferior vena cava (IVC) directly to the pulmonary arteries, allowing oxygen-poor blood from the lower body to flow to the lungs without passing through the heart. This completes the circulation started by the earlier Glenn Procedure.
The surgery generally takes 6–8 hours, depending on the child’s heart anatomy and previous surgical history.
Hospital stay is usually 2–3 weeks, including several days in the cardiac ICU for close monitoring. Complete recovery may take 6–12 weeks, with gradual improvement in oxygen levels, stamina, and activity.
Your treatment will cost approximately USD 6200 at Amrita Hospital.
