ERCP (Diagnostic) or Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP– Diagnostic) is a specialized procedure used to examine the bile ducts, pancreas, gallbladder, and liver. It combines endoscopy with X-ray imaging to identify conditions such as blockages, stones, strictures, infections, and tumors.
During the procedure, a flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth into the small intestine, where contrast dye is injected to obtain detailed X-ray images of the ducts. Diagnostic ERCP (Diagnostic) is recommended when non-invasive imaging like ultrasound, CT scan, or MRCP does not provide enough clarity for accurate diagnosis. The ERCP (Diagnostic) procedure is available at Amrita Hospital in India.

No, patients are sedated or receive anesthesia to help ensure comfort during the procedure. Patients may have a mild, temporary sore throat or a feeling of fullness afterward, but this usually lasts only several hours.
Patients are required to fast prior to their procedure, at least for 6-8 hours. They should inform the doctor of medications they take, any allergies, and if they have any bleeding disorders. Blood tests are sometimes obtained to assess health prior to the procedure.
All medical procedures have some risks, and while diagnostic ERCP (Diagnostic) is relatively safe, it carries risk of pancreatitis, infection, bleeding, and an adverse reaction to the dye. While these risks can occur, they are uncommon and minimized by the experience and expertise of an ERCP (Diagnostic) specialists and appropriate monitoring following the procedure.
Most patients go home on the same day once sedation has worn off. Some patients may experience discomfort but it is normal for most patients to be able to return to regular activities within 24 hours. Patients should avoid heavy meals and alcohol while recovering.
